L18 8.1L swap resource thread

Main thing is it's not pcm controlled. The 8.1 stock alternator is. Not that it's a bad thing. But like running cable throttle to simplify things, this simplifies the charging system. Plus it's widely available everywhere in 124amp and higher versions.
so if keeping drive by wire - does this matter?

here is a 250a alternator for $118

i get that a lot of people dont trust ebay.. I do for some things..

I never trust eBay listing or most companies from Amazon either I'd get the part numbers and do the research yourself just to be sure.

well i canceled my order and readup who they were.. it was just partsgeek so I called them. Cancelled from that guy.
anywho.. I was able to order the right one.

$120 to my door..

is there a difference between using the BBC or SBC motor mounts? I already bought new rubber to put into my sbc mounts, but the engine I picked up still has the BBC motor mounts attached. I will be using the ORD engine cross member and wondering which way to go. what did you do?

Not the LS swap motor mounts, just DIY4x's competition poly motor mounts (same ones you can bolt to any old small block)

so small block.. gotcha..

i just wasnt sure if the BBC motor mounts were that much stronger or not.. if the engine has both mounts, and i have both sets.. just flip a coin i guess..

:haha:

Personally, I would NOT use the “competition” style engine mounts that are basically made of leaf spring eye bushings unless you are willing to tolerate feeling every bit of engine harmonics right to the fillings of your teeth. Those are great for exactly what they are advertised for, competition. For a quazi daily driver or something you plan on spending a lot of seat time in I’d go with stock engine saddles and mounts with Energy Suspension inserts. Don’t bother with any of the Chineseium engine mounts from Napa or anywhere else. They’re all junk these days.

When it comes to using OEM style mounts and saddles on these, we recently learned is either work fine as one as the saddle and mount are a matching set from a SBC or BBC. Don’t use a saddle from a BBC and a mount from a SBC or visa versa or you’ll have mating issues. We learned that on Robs K5 8.1L swap

These are mounts and saddles with Energy Suspension inserts straight off the TBI 5.7 that the 8.1L in my 89 Suburban replaced.

To each their own. I don’t notice any more vibs whatsoever with those mounts.

I was going to say the same thing....

So far I don’t notice any either lol.

You clowns probably didn’t notice any difference because you replaced a clapped out old small block with 2 dead holes and 4 plug wires melted to the cheap rusty headers before the engine swap where the new competition mounts were used. No wonder nobody has noticed a difference in vibrations :dunno:............ Just kidding…. :pimp:

Glad you’re all happy with them. I know of a few guys that weren’t and pulled them back out. When you see a set of used ones for sales, ask them why they are selling them

I have those mounts on 3 different rigs, and my brother has them on 4 different rigs (some on road rigs, some Offroad rigs), and over half of those was the same motor that was in the truck before and after the mount swap. Didn’t notice a difference in any of them

Yup I took very new GM clam shell mounts (NOS) not Chinese, out and installed DIY4x comp mounts in. No noticeable vibration. Same engine, tune, everything. Balanced 355, will balance all my rebuilt engines from now on. Engine sites higher trans and t case are proper angles now.

Where are yous guys buying your flywheel bolts? i found 12563485 @ 11.50 each or amazon $9 each... is that right?
