Hey guys,

Thought someone might have a source, or be able to make me something.

I've got new $$$$ tower speakers on my boat, and want to secure them before mooring the boat in the water over the 4th.

I was told the mounting bolts are Metric 3/8" x 1.5 threads by 80mm long, which should be an M10. Stainless

They are cap style bolts, with Allen heads.

Anyone have a source or way to get security, torx, security torx, or something higher security than an Allen head bolt?

Only other thing i've seen people do is get a machine shop to add a center pin to the allen head, and find a drilled out allen key.

Will do this if absolutely necessary, but don't know where to get a drilled security style allen key. Already have security torx bits, so that wouldnt' be an issue.

I need to have them by next friday. Suggestions?

Harbor Freight has a security bit set that has a bunch of styles for like 8 bucks.

Hudson Fasteners has a ton of security screw styles to choose from

Crap, just blanked on the size you need. Yeah, none of the security bits or screws will be anything close to M10 or 3/8" :doah:

You could use a shear bolt but you'd have to cut it off to take the speakers down.

Yah, that won't work. The 2 halves of the clamp totally cover the bolt once installed, and the head is recessed. No way to remove if i used a shear bolt.

If I absolutely can't get some made, i can drill/tap through the side of where the clamp halves overlap, and install a security bolt there, but thats not something i can do quickly when i get to the boat. Won't really have access to work on it for very long. Does ace or anywhere stock some standard (smaller) size torx or security bolts

Any machinists have access to these standard cap bolts, that they could add a center pin to? More than willing to pay for your time if you can get them done and shipped in time.

mcmaster has tamper proof spanner in 3/8

Also, needs to be able to take more torque than those spanners can, and needs to fit in teh same space a cap bolt like below will.

How about a S&W M&P in 9mm? :D

On a more serious note, just tack weld the regular fasteners after they are installed? Or maybe some really good loctite?

yeah, that confused me... the bible has NOTHING tamperproof in metric...

you can make slotted screws into tamperproof beforehand and bring em with ya...... buy the right size, then take a grinder, dremel, something and remove the "loosen" side.. so it's like a tamperproof "one way" bolt..

Hm. Not a terrible idea. Would be next to impossible to remove though....

Maybe i need to drill/tap through the bracket for a security bolt. Really wished to just replace the mounting bolts and be done though.

Could you make up the clamp and bolt it down before you go to the boat?

How about tightening everything down then cross drill the threads or across the head recess and install a small roll pin to lock it down?

Receilved this regarding the hardware from
The speaker mfg:
The bolt fits both a M10 (loose fit) and a 3/8 (tighter fit). The M10 is a 1.5mm thread pitch… I just got a newer style bolt gage from Fastenal… holes “with the threads”, not just the hole (no threads). On the older gauge the M10 is way too loose compared to the 3/8 with fits perfect. On the newer bolt gage the M10 thread into our bolt nicely… so that is the correct bolt. The 3/8” #18 bolt also seems to work but the bolt is more snug.
*
The smaller bolt that we use for the “clamp to speaker housing” mounts are pretty much interchangeable…. The supplied M8 with 1.25 thread pitch is almost the same as the 5/16th #18 (more snug).

Any way this is true? Everything I know about
Hardware tells me he just doesn't k ow how to identify threads, and his bolt
Gauge isn't deep enough to identify when they aren compatible. What says everyone? A fine thread 3/8ths bolt is a lot easier to source than an m10

In some instances a SAE and Metric thread is so close you could "try" using one instead of the other. The thread gages are too thin though to accurately determine if the bolt will actually thread the whole length.

Now you could always run an SAE tap through the hole to change the thread pitch.

Ok, thanks. I need to check the extra fasteners and see what they are.

The bolt place your recommended didn't have access to anything like what i needed.

Seems to be the best thing will be to buy duplicates, and have someone machine them for a center pin.

Is that something you have the ability to do, scott? Its only 4 bolts.

Went down to the hardware store, they are definitely M10 1.5 thread.

Anyone have a simple ish source for these bolts in standard cap socket head form, that has the ability to add a center pin?

That is looking like my only option. More than willing ot pay for your time!

hex head is a cap screw... an allen is a socket cap screw..
