LED & HID driving light positioning

probably going to go with the behind the grill signals. Gonna try to get to P+P on Thursday and get a set.

I want to know if I get a discount on a 40" bar for giving you the blinker idea. J/K

Looks good.

What's the DOT rule on running those lights uncovered? I know my lights have to covered, so I just point them down.

Do you have any pictures of how you actually mounted them? That's a good idea, I may have to get a quote for 2 and copy you.

I mounted them using the existing upper holes for the stock lights. had to mount them upside down and spend about 2 minutes with the dremel on one bracket on each side. Also used one washer behind one bracket on each side to get the angle right. Here's a few pics of the mounting.

Of course, that is going to save me a lot of time!

Thanks!

They are supposed to be covered, but i'm not going to unless i get hassled. I have an idea for a quick and cheap lens cover that i want to try out anyway :)

Now I'm curious to see how you're going to mount the older style turn signal/running light, since they mount to the grill its self.

I like that too.

Maybe an '82 front bumper with the blinkers would be another good option.

Well I was about to head down to pick and pull and then my buddy showed up right on queue with the colored lenses I wanted for my lights. Pulled the grill off and sure enough there is a nice spot to mount an LED pod back there :D...

Looks great, but those seem like they would be WAY bright for turn signals.

They're bright, people will know when you are turning :D.

You can wire em up with a diode though and dim them a bit. If you wire them with a diode on the running lamp wire you can run them as both a running lamp and a turn signal.

I think i might need to change the flasher though. Sometimes it thinks the bulb is burnt out cause the LED doesn't draw enough power i think. Doing some more research on this...

Here's my low beam (right side light burnt out), then when I flip my LED driving lights on. Pretty much love my LEDs. I have a couple really large floods, I think I'm going to try and mount behind the grill. But I need to find a 12 to 24volt step up transformer for them first.

I am soooooo gonna put the 2 of these LED floods in the front somewhere. 8,100 lumens each! Heck ya.

Electronic flasher. I used an el12 or similar. Hazards work because there is enough load. On the entire system but not turns. If you have a standard bulb in the back a new el12 will work for you. I you plan on LEDs in the rear you will need a solid state flasher that will not tick and are expensive ie 50 bucks. But if you are putting LEDs in them you should have the money. You can put a resister in parallel, but for me I just hid the stock 1157 bulbs behind the LEDs.

Just thought I´d share my 2cents after trying out me OnX LED bar and the two squadrons.... Great lights, really bright and perfect for flöood lighting and short distance lighting....

But one thing the LEDs can´t do, even though the company claims it, is the distance.... The old HID´s reached at least 3 times as far with the driving beams and more than 7 times further on the pencils. So I will still keep the HID bar with the 5 8" Hellas up top.. just need to make it foldable to get the truck into the garage.....

So if you´re into LED lights, great flood/work lights, but nothing if you´re looking for distance. (My Hella HID high beem shines further than the spot LEDs of the OnX bar). So I´m a little disapointed in the distance they put out!

The only "new" LED optuion for distance is the 8" round Hella Rallye 4000 LED. The only LED light, that really has some distanve to it too.
