Lets see your open element air cleaners

i got an 88 350 tbi and my engine had a noticable power increase with the open element. S&B 14x4

exactly!!

What I learned was the housing has more to do with power than the filter. I'm not trying to start a flame war over filters here, if you like yours, use it. My point is the housing you use should help turn the air into the carb or throttlebody...it should not be perfectly flat across the top. The picture Zoomad76 posted is what the top should look like to make max power. About his water problem, I got no ideas.
George

shape is part of the reason i bought the tunnel ram ...it supposed to smooth and straighten air flow downwards....i wish they would make a top for the tunnel ran air cleaner like this lid..

i think that would be perfect for straight smooth airflow

Anybody use something like this?

Seems like it could be a good base for a snorkle system:D

I dont want to rain on the open element parade. But with TBI at least, the stock CAI or an aftermarket CAI is the best way to go. TBI does not like hot under hood air. I have tried open element ACs in some TBI trucks. All lost power compaied to the stock air filter set up. I proved this with my Gtech. 0-60 times averaged 1 to 2 seconds slower with open element In my K5 on a hot summer day. This power loss isn't noticible in the winter when its cold. But in the summer it really shows up espically when towing. The trucks gave the illusion of making more power cuz you could hear the TB sucking all that hot air.Which sounded good. But IMHO it is not worth the money to do an open element to loose power and gas MPG unless all you want is looks. The stock setup will flow way more air than stock the TB can ever use.
A guy I know went to a open element on his K2500 TBI truck. I told him not to.
It wasn't long before he had his stock set up back on. Got to say "See I told you so":D He has a small 5th wheel he tows. He told me he lost a lot of power towing up hills with the open element.

If you want to make more power with TBI spend the money you would spend on an open element AF on a Powercharger. It is a velocity stack that replaces the spacer between the air cleaner housing and the TB. The spacer is very restrictive and screws up the air flow.

Where did you get that one?

It's not mine, saw it on ebay. I think it's made my Airaid. I doubt it adds any power over the stock setup, but for someone fabbing a snorkle, it looks like it would work perfectly. You could probably even get it to seal up pretty well. Search for "TBI air intake" or something similsr on ebay, you'll find several like that one.

Eldebrock open air kit $20.00 checker - throw out edlebrock filter
KN filter element $40.00

KN filter kit $120.00

I'm running a 2 inch carb spacer with K&N 10 1/2 inch velocity stack with a ram air hood scoop (homemade) with built-in rain baffle to keep rain or fog from directly hitting/condensing on my filter element. About $30 for metal for the scoop and about $120 for stack and spacer. Plus it looks like something off of Mad Max. Some people like it and some people don't... but they all stare.

No pics, but I got the $20 Mr Gasket chrome jobby with 14" filter at autozone. It fits just right on the TBI. I don't think it gives it any more or less power, I just like the sound, (especially with the TBI spacer).
I did try the Pacesetter F/X (tube with cone filter) for a short while. It was a total POS and not worth the money. The tube kept falling out of the TBI adapter and let unfiltered air into the intake.
