lifters..

My whole point is I don't want to see two guys, both with great tech knowledge, butting heads over something like this. Counter-productive and unnecessary...

Make sure you examine the rollers on the lifters when you replace them. If they look good you are fine, hopefully it's just the lifters and they didn't wipe out a cam lobe, if they did, it will probably be obvious when you examine the rollers. Do you have a magnetic drain plug?

Yes I believe there is a magnetic drain plug. I'm not hearing any other odd noises coming from the valvetrain, other than the tick. The Avalanche had a bad roller wheel a few years back and wiped out the cam lobe, that was a very distinct sound.

From the Avalanche...

This made a weird chirping type of noise, never heard any ticking from this one.

So, from just a few sites I've checked out, two online places and two local auto parts stores, I have come to a conclusion so far, that it's going to run about $200 for a full set of lifters only.

Except for one site that had GM performance parts replacements, WITH the install kit for $222.

Anything really wrong with this setup? or should I stick with a more common performance parts replacement company?

I haven't done engine parts searching for this type of stuff in a LONG time.

I don't have a high performance engine, it doesn't see extended periods of high RPM's, it's just a rebuilt 350,,,,355 now, with the added aftermarket roller cam/lifter kit installed in the hopes it would ass to life longevity and maybe free up a touch more power. Not to mention not have to worry about certain oils now days and lack of additives.

Nothing wrong with any of those options for your purpose.

Also, that roller was definitely messed up, but you caught it before it seized up. I've seen them after a roller seized and it was a lot worse. Plus it starts ticking because it keeps getting shorter.

It's also easy to mistake exhaust leaks at the head flange for ticking vavletrain, but if you are getting to to go away temporarily then thats obviously not it.

Johnson lifters is the oldest lifter company around and they supply just about everyone their lifters.

Used to see a lot of GM hydraulic roller take outs with zero miles on ebay and craigslist from the "ZZ" series crate motors, as people would pull them and replace with solids.

Might be worth checking out, could save you some $$. I don't think there are any inherent shortcomings with the GM hydraulic rollers.

Anyone confirm that GM PN 5233745 is the correct one? Looks like you can put a set together off ebay for under $100.

I'm runnin stock rollers on my vortec 383. We disassembled them and clean up upon install. Motor has bad a slight tick since new. 5-6000 miles on it now and sounds the same. Idle it makes no noise. I'm starting to believe its cheap headers giving that tinny sound.

Well, I know mine are the lifters, I have messed with them with the valve covers off, I can adjust them to all be nice and quiet, then the next morning they'll all scream again, usually the majority will shut up after a short time, but there's this one, that is a real trouble maker, tighten it down, running, with the cover off, it gets nice and quiet, then the longer it idles, it slowly comes back. I can do this over and over until it finally bottoms the rocker nut out.

Just out of curiosity, I dropped in some STP additive, really thick stuff. Drove it around, hit the freeway to see if it'd go into a higher gear (different trans problem) hich it does, just very soft.

I get back home and that loud single lifter is absolutely quiet. Engine sounds like it did right after rebuild.

Dunno, we'll see how long it lasts.

Also see how it does tomorrow at first start up, it was noisy now obviously because the additive hadn't been circulated.

A tiny exhaust leak at one of the header ports by the head can sound a lot like a ticking rocker. Might want to check your header gaskets.

That does not sound good at all too me, you can bottom the rocker nut out? How does it go away the next time then if you are already bottomed out? If I had only heard that one piece of info I would of guessed it was a seized roller/flat lobe.

Is it still running on 8 cylinders or is the quiet cylinder now dead? I have had the GM break in additive do the same thing to a DD quad 4 engine a while back. Was a slight ticking and it disappeared. Eventually it came back though, never did cause a problem though over the next 50k miles.

It's running on all 8. I just went out there a little bit ago and started it up, it's still ticking pretty good at start up, but does go away pretty quickly when the oil pressure comes up. Still a slight tick after but not as bad as before the additive. I'm guess all I really did was made the engine oil a touch thicker. :tongue1:
