I'm getting ready to start the build of my '72. I have a 14FF housing that I need to fill. I already have everything to build the axle except for a locker/posi. The truck is going to driven on the street well over 50%, with my offroad driving consisting of hunting leases and light trails. I will NOT be doing any crawling with the truck. I've considered keeping it completely open (I have all the spiders) but I decided that a 1 legged burnout with the 454 just wouldn't be cool. I've narrowed my choices to three (in no particular order):

1. Detroit Locker (hard to beat the price, but don't know that I want it locking and unlocking on me when driving 70mph down the road)
2. ARB (highest in price, but only locked when want it to be)
3. Eaton Posi (expensive for a Posi, and haven't heard much talk about them)

Most comments and opinions welcome ;) Thanks!

Get a Detroit and don't look back. You live in San Antonio and don't have to deal with snow/ice.

Locker, provided you do not mind dealing with occasional torque steer and tire chirping. I run a lockright in my 14BFF and it's managable on the street even with a manual transmission and BBC.

Detroit, they are the way to go. You wont feel it do anything abnormal at 70 mph. Once you put a detroit in the rear, you will rarely need 4x4.

How do you drive on the street?

If straight line acceleration is your only thing, then locker, hands down.

Since you don't have snow/ice, street manners are the ONLY place the posi is going to be a good choice more than likely. Haven't heard one person that has the 800lb spring setup Eaton comment about how they work offroad, so that statement really can't be qualified. If you aren't lifting one wheel off the ground, a stiff posi would *probably* work fine.

as someone who has the same decision to make and that i see my fair share of snow and ice, ill just ask how detroits are on ice? fishtailing everywhere?

BTDT, even my gov-lock put me in a scary situation in snow/ice.

Any traction aid you can't completely turn off is going to cause problems, terrain and driving style are going to be the influencing factors as to how bad they will actually be.

It takes a bit of getting used to but a detroit on snowy and icy roads is not that big of a deal. You have to change your driving style a bit, I drove my blazer for 5 years as a DD with swampers and a detroit. Got to put some BFG ats on for a while and hardly ever noticed the detroits. I say tires have way more influence than a locker in the back

When I first installed my detroits it was in the winter, and the first turn I took on a slushy road was crazy because I hit the gas around the corner and it spun me around almost wrecking:eek1:. I love my Detroits!:D You just have to know how to drive them.

I have a Detroit in my Suburban, and it runs great on the street and on trails it's awesome. I have an Eaton posi in my pickup that is my construction work vehicle. I've spun a tire quite a few times on job roads before it hooked up, but not a problem.

If you get the detroit you'll never have to upgrade.

Heck, they used to be an option in muscle cars from the factory.

My detroit isn't that bad in the ice and snow and I am driving on 36-12.5 Goodyear RTII's (Hummer bias ply tires). You just have to be careful and can't drive like an idiot. No different than you should always drive on slippery roads.:D

Thanks for the input guys. Called up PORC and got a smokin deal on a Detroit.
