Locker questions (and preference poll)

What locker would you recommend for this build?

I don't have a detroit. My understanding of how they operate is that if you COAST through a corner, you aren't slipping anything...it's "unlocked". If you hit the throttle while turning, it will lock, and to some degree you will induce tire scrubbing. Most people say they don't really notice it causing massive tire wear or anything.

Gov-lock and the helical units are the only ones that aren't slipping to some extent, that aren't true lockers. I think you are worrying about wear too much. The Eaton posi units work for decades. But I don't think that's an issue, GM saw fit not to use the clutch style limited slip in trucks, only gov-locks, so that should tell you something about posi applicability in a heavy vehicle.

I've only felt the gov-lock when I spun the tires from a stop or very slow speed, and since the wheel spin means you have minimal traction in the first place, the engagement isn't brutal. Normal driving you'll never notice it, because it's not locking up.

I don't think the truetrac would be bad for mild wheeling, but what do they cost vs. a gov-lock carrier or complete axle assembly? You'd be one of the first on here I've heard of that will run a truetrac. Still not sure how you'd know it was working.

I'm not worried, I'm just soaking up all the tech. I'm at least a month out from needing the rear axle, so I have time to think it over, and I have time to shop around for something that's cost effective. Although, if cost was my only concern, I would have bought the Eaton posi unit and been done with it. But I want to be happy with the end result, and I want to learn as much as I can along the way.

As said before, if I came across a gov-lock axle, I'd happily run it (and no doubt it would be cheap!). But having not found one yet, I'm looking at my other options. If I had to buy a new locker, I'm still leaning toward the Powertrax. But my final decision will probably be swayed by what I find cheaply and conveniently available.

What i will say about my last Detroit was that it was locked more than not. Essentially it was spooled, but it never caused me any issues my foot or lack of brain cells didnt cause.

Running a standard and typically being easy on the throttle, i don't say it was unnoticeable though. You knew it was there

I've run grizzly's, detroits, lockrights, no slips, gov loc's, Eaton posi's.

In a truck or off-road vehicle I'll take a locker any day of the week.

I did have my gov loc in a 14 bolt ff fail. But I was never nice to it.

Lockrights havent impressed me much, blew a couple up. But they were warranted, I suspect I got a couple out of a bad batch.

I'd go with a Detroit or grizzly, can't beat em.

Shouldn't you have a Detroit in it already...? Being a CUCV and all.

I have an M1009 (CUCV Blazer). The Blazers came with 3.08 10-bolts and a rear gov-locks. It's the pickup variants (M1008, M1010, M1028, etc.) that come with 4.56 1-ton axles & the Detroit. This truck's rear axle failed (sounded like typical G80 failure) and the P.O. got 1/2-way through installing a 1979ish 14bff in the back (but didn't bother getting a matching axle for the front :screwy:). So I have mismatching gear ratios and mismatching lug patterns. I've located an 8-lug front axle for the build, and I am gathering the parts to rebuild and regear the rear end to 3.73 with some form of locker. Hence starting this thread. I'd much rather get the locker figured out before I start reassembling the axle than wind up ripping the axle apart later.

$485 shipped. That is a significant reduction from Summit's price. I'll keep that in mind if I go that direction. Thanks for sharing!

Check out justdifferentials.com

I had nothing but good experiences from then and great prices.

my bad...those always slip what's left of my mind....:doah:

You still should be able to pickup a 3/4 or 1 ton 14bbf that's already locked...

It's possible. Not a lot of parts local to me (one downside to living in the woods). If I ever find something, I would expect it to be cheap. But finding axles is slow business. I have some time, and I keep my eyes open. I'm not planning to go buy a new locker. That's gonna be a last resort. But I'm not confident that I'll find a used on either. :dunno:

pm muddog member here and parts out lots of cucv trucks . has axles for sale on here now and will ship .

upstate member here just got one from him if I recall and shipping was real good price truck freight . but he wanted the 4.56 gears .

muddog might sell you just a locker ? he good guy I have got stuff from him also .

I've noticed the Lock Right or Detroit while driving, but not enough to be dangerous, just enough to remind you it is there.

The only negatives I noticed with the detroit in the rear, was that going uphill under throttle (maybe going too fast too) there is a tendancy to push (understeer) on gravel or dirt roads, and you might have to lift slightly to turn. Also noticed this on snowy mountain passes, with tight turns. I guess those could be dangerous with the wrong driver.

Does Auburn make an ECTED for this axle? I vote Powertrax, had a few with no real problems other that some popping sounds.

What sort of popping sounds? Is a quieter version of the clicking that the Detroit/Lock-Right make? Or something else?

It looks like Auburn doesn't have an ECTED for this axle. Which is a bummer. It looks like a decent product at a lower-than-average price.

Yeah I think it's a bit quieter then the Loc-Rite.

I love it. It's quiet no unusual quirks and it's very predictable, meaning if you mash the pedal going around a corner on pavement you can feel it (tries to push the front end) unless you have the tires spinning. Gravel or dirt, it will push a little but if you have the front hubs locked in, it pulls you around the corner just fine.
