Hi all, looking at getting lockers on my just acquired 96 Silverado Z71 sitting on fresh 33 inch Discoverer STTs:D Im not sure how to tell what axels are on it? Im looking for front and rear lockers. Is the push botton or the manual lockers better? What brands are do you guys recommend? It will be used to pull a trailer and offroading.

Thanks

well you a new person .

you want info in less than 30 min time.

you post up on a solid axle forum with your ifs stuff.

what do you think?

first off we have a ifs 88-up section.

then the z71 could have a 8.5 or a 9.5 rear axle.

then full lockers will set you back a lot of cash. whats your plans for this rig ? we need more info.

Sorry for the newb question and lack of patience:( My truck is my plow truck and dd in the winter and offroader and trailer puller in the summer I believe My rear is a 10 bolt?

o.k. if plow and trailer and dd use i would strongly rec a selectable locker.

nice to be able to unlock and be open when no extra is needed .

as for a locker in the front on a ifs i dont kow ? ? ? not read to much on this but those 1/2 tons are light to begin with. i think open would be best.

and lockers in the front put a lot more stress on front end parts / steering parts. and make it much harder to steer .

OK thanks I really would like a locker in the front because I have already gotten stuck once with only one front and one rear spinning

You would be surprised how much traction you get from having the rear axle locked up.

Is your truck a 1/2ton? If so, no one makes a front locker for it. I agree with sweetK30 that a selectable locker in the rear is your best option.

Really no one!? Ok what do you suggest for a rear locker? I read some where Z71 should have a rear locker OEM. I also have an 89 gmc jimmy with Warn locker on the front and it seems to do real good

Alright thanks any specific ones? Why would someone put locking hubs on there what benefits do they have?

Well most trucks came with auto locking hubs, wich are not very good.
Locking hubs were invented to engage/disengage the front wheels from the front axle shafts. Idea was to keep parts that were not needed in 2WD mode from rotating in order to reduce mechanical drag and thus save gas.

ok and thats the only reason? There is no other benefit? Also is the elocker better than a manual locker?

the auto hubs are somewhat unreliable.
They might not engage when you want, and may stay engaged when you dont want them.

Manual ones you know when they are on and off

Ummm... auto hubs? The guy has a 96. IFS does not have auto hubs. Aint no way to put locking hubs on a IFS truck. No hubs there to put locking hubs or auto hubs in for that matter.
IFS use an electric accuator to engage the front axle. So dont worry about locking hubs.
and
Do not put a locking differential in the front of an IFS truck... Nuff said.
If you want to go with a locking rear differental for better traction, Great. I would go with a Powertrax No Slip. Nice mild mannered locker for street and trail. EZ install and forget about it. It will be there when you need it.
Lots cheaper than a Elocker. IMO a 10 bolt aint worth sinking $650-700 or more. if you pay someone to do the install and setup into just to have an electric locker. But if you like to push buttons and have the cash then go for the elocker.

BTW for whoever posted about this being a 'Solid axle forum" It is not! This is the garage. All 4x4 questions are welcome here no matter what the vehicle is rolling on..

do a google search?

your jimmy doesnt have a warn locker... it has warn locking hubs. What they do is lock and unlock the front drive to your wheels

89 jimmy???:dunno:
I think you need to go back and read post #1

really?

Oh sorry. I did not catch that the OP threw another truck in this thread. We started out IFS and lockers...then SFA and hubs... then lockers then hubs ....I am getting confused:D
