Lockright or Detroit

contrary to what others have said, detroits are not bullet proof.i blew mine on dry pave ment making a quick u-turn.snap bang and i was left with almost no teeth left.14bff detroit 2 months after i installed it.just took me 10 months to get around to doing the axle swap and detroit.too late for me to get free replacement.oh well.

id jump on the lockrite for the price if the noise doesn't bother you, but im surprised no one mentioned how noisy the lockrite is. So clicky around turns (off the gas) to the point girl passengers actually notice and say something.

My opinion, if it's for the 14blt get it. If it's for the D44, get an Aussie Locker.

run a heavier gear oil. I ran 85-140 for a while. now I run ACES Quantum Blue gear lube. I never hear a peep out of it. The only time I've heard it is when I ran the diff out of oil :doah:(I had a bad pinion leak...)

I've ran a LR in my front D60 for years now with no issues. First couple of years was with 38's and now 40's. I've also broken several 30-spline stubs so I'm not easy on it. On the other hand my buddy did break the LR in the D60 on his truck, but this was also on a 7,000 lb., 42" tires, and a big-block after a couple of years of abuse. It did not grenade, just would not always lock up going forward but worked in reverse.

For the comment about the rear end locking up after 15 miles, I just really doubt that had anything to do with the lock-right. Unless you really messed up the install there is nothing in the LR that would make the axle lock up. More than likely the ring and pinion or bearings were the true culprit.

The No-Slip version lock-rights for 10 bolts, D60 and 14bsf come with a hardened center pin. I'm not sure about the ff though.

thanks for the input. think I'll go ahead and get it. And see about getting a hardened center pin

kinda of an off topic question.. for a DD truck i have a detriot in my rear 14bolt already, i have a 60 up front.. how is a lockrite in the front for street driving? it doesnt do anything unless in 4wd and im only in 4wd during some snow few times a year on the road.. so how does it run on the street?

Well in deep snow, you'll love it. On ice, you'd just need to be a bit more careful....though the same goes for the Detroit that you already have in the rear.

i have 4:56gears so i have to remove my gears in a dana 60 front to install it right?

I have 4.10s, but I had to pull the carrier to get the rollpin out. That's the rollpin that holds the cross shaft in the carrier. Between the bearing cap and u-bolt, I wasn't able to get a square shot at the hole with it in the truck.

In 2wd you would never notice a front LR, even with the hubs locked or drive flanges (I have flanges on mine).

I have 4.56:1 & was able to install mine without removing the ring gear. The crossshaft would go in from one side, but not the other. It was the way the teeth lined up with the hole. Try it before you start pulling things apart.

i remember wheeling with BadDog at Blazer Bash a few years back. His lock-Right was noisy as all get out on Upper helldorado...and appeared not to be always working. The next day on pritchett it crapped out entirely. If I recall right it was not quite 2 years old at the time and he replaced it with a Detroit. This was in his front D60. They're not as bullet proof as some seem to think in the front 60 application.
