I got a parts truck for free and it has a 14 bolt rear end with 8 lugs. My 82 GMC has 10bolts front and back. Is this a good heavy duty rear being its a
14 bolt 8 lug?? If this was to be put on my 82, how would I make my front
axel 8 lug also?? the parts truck is an 86 model. How could I find out if it has a 4 bolt main block?? My truck is still the same as last time most of you guys seen it. I'm still confused on what lift and tires to go with. here it is as of today, and someone stole my front 2 wheel rings.

The rear axle in question is a semi-float(sf) 14 bolt. its a pretty good axle not the all out beef of a full floater but I have never broken a 14sf. To get the front to match you need the 8 lug hubs, spindles, and rotors off of a D44 or 10bolt. Lift and tires should be dictated by what you plan on doing with the truck. Mud, trails, rocks, work?

I plan on using it for the streets and beach only.
I wanted a 6" with 35's or a 4" with 35's or 2.5
with 33's.

So what your saying, is it won't be hard to switch my front
axels to 8 lug, or very exspensive??..

Will this 14 bolt rear bolt right up to my 82 with no mods??

Can you still find this stuff used??
Is it very $$$ to buy new??

Well, the parts truck is 2WD, so no interchange there.

You can swap parts from 8 lug to 6 lug on 4WD trucks.

As for buying used vs new, you can look up parts online, at napaonline.com or partsamerica.com (Kragen/Schucks/Checker.)

Or read lots of posts here ;)

on that front end 8 lug conversion, you will also need the brake backing plates too, the 3/4 ton versions are alittle bigger to accomodate the larger diameter brake rotors.

So that means the rear end won't bolt up??
Sorry, I'm still a newb :o

The rear should be okay -- though not exciting.

The front on the parts truck is not useful was what I meant.

Yup, I knew I could not use none of the front end parts.
I just did not know if the rear was worth the conversion
I thought 86 rear would be a little stronger and worth the
conversion compared to the 10 bolt.

The SF was also available in 6-lug, so you could convert it to 6-lug using GM or aftermarket parts. The easiest, but not cheapest, would be to use aftermarket axleshafts (available from ORD and others), and swap to disks using bolt on brackets and 1/2 ton truck 4wd front calipers.

There are several lockers and Limited slips available for the SF, including a Lockright, Detroits, Eatons, etc.

For 33's-35's, it will hold up fine, especially if you have aftermarket shafts. It weighs less and has better clearance.

The only thing to look out for is overall axle width. Make sure it's not narrower than your 4x4.

How is the proper way to do that?? And thanks.

:I think they only made one width of semi-float, didn't they, unless it came from a van.
