I'm dying to take the top off the Blazer, but I live in an apartment complex, and worry about it sitting in the spot all night. It fits in my covered spot, so it is lit, but still . . .

There really isn't much in it to steal, no big stereo or anything. I have thought maybe tossing a cover on it at least. Lets face it, it's probably not hard to break into even with the top on. lol.

I dunno, any of you guys pondered this before?

What year?

If injected, swap the ECM fuse with a blown one.

Get one of the "column guards".

Obviously nothing will stop a determined thief with enough time and resources on their hands, but the column guard will stop the guy with a hammer from getting it (which is by far the most common way to steal these trucks), and the ECM fuse will disable it electronically, both not permanent nor require any modification to the rig.

Holy crap, these things are available again! http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/381043451799?lpid=82&chn=ps Only pain with these is them flopping around in the rig when you are driving. Throw it in the console, etc. There is another brand out there (or used to be) but you have to rivet it in place (rivets together, not to the column). Still doesn't modify the vehicle IIRC, but it's always there. Can't recall who made/makes that style though. Steadfast used to, but not seeing any on ebay.

Yeah, 1988, so it is fuel injected. Thanks!

Note that JUST swapping the fuse, someone is going to destroy the steering column before they even figure out it won't run. The column guards are good because they are a visual deterrent, hopefully before they start messing with the truck they will see it, particularly when the top is on, it's locked and they break the vent window.

Added info to above post for the column guards.

Good advice. Am googling column guards right now.

I swear someone else made them too, and IIRC the only color was chrome. The bad thing about those is they are gaudy (IMO) but I also think they have to be, since I don't want to be replacing my window because a thief didn't see the guard. That's one reason I like the red one, it's gaudy, but only when it needs to be.

I just take the steering wheel off becuase there isnt anything to hold on to. a hidden power switch to kill the battery works good too unless you want your radio time off...

An alarm? Get a decent one w/ motion and glass sensors.

That's also probably a wise move. My parking spot is very close to where my apartment is. As long as I'm not hammered and sleep through it.:D

At first i was worried about people screwing with it, taking the spare, some meth head stealing the battery out of it, that sort of thing.

But I hadn't thought about how easy it is to pop the ignition and just drive it off. Now I'm worried about the whole thing. :D

The meth heads will get in if they want. if you use tamper proof hardware and everything is bolted down they will move on. As for stealing the whole rig, its very hard to steal something you cant steer. take the steering wheel off. You're pretty much dead in the water without it.

Is there a kit you recommend?

Kit for hardware? I regularly use mcmaster carr for tamper proof stuff.

As for the steering wheel I have a regular old column with a gt wheel so I take the 5 screws out and leave the wheel in the garage.

Soon enough ill have a quick release hub which can be found fairly cheap on summit and ill get a locking toolbox to throw the wheel in when im out and about.
