Looking for a little security advice

Kit for hardware? I regularly use mcmaster carr for tamper proof stuff.

As for the steering wheel I have a regular old column with a gt wheel so I take the 5 screws out and leave the wheel in the garage.

Soon enough ill have a quick release hub which can be found fairly cheap on summit and ill get a locking toolbox to throw the wheel in when im out and about.

Yeah, thanks, I meant the wheel. Sounds like a good plan.

Oh ok lol. Theres two types from what ive seen. One style is the old school version that has a bolt running through it. You just pull the bolt its off. The other is a sprung system that pops the wheel off when you pull or push the flange. Both are safe and wont leave you with the wheel in your hands at speed. if you have a regular column that uses a star pattern of boltd you wont be able to use the older bolt style due to the lack ofnthere being a center shaft. I think 80 bucks will get you one....

The shift lever on my '82 GMC 's steering colum is rather sloppy now,I can push the rivet out without tools and pull the lever off,and lock it in the glove box to make it harder to steal..(not that anyone would want it really!..:surepal: )..

If someone was smart enough to figure out how to get the diesel fired up with my array of toggle and push button switches to activate the glow plugs and cold start advance, then maybe they should own it..

I carry one of those "Clubs" that hooks over the steering wheel & brake pedal, but I only have one because I found it in a junk car's trunk a friend was scrapping..never used it as intended..but if I ever get "road raged" it might come in handy as another kind of club!..:D

Anyone try THE CLUB steering wheel lock.

Problem with those (I have heard) is with my skinny little stock steering wheel, it doesn't take much to snip the wheel and just pop the club out.

The stock steering wheel on most 73-87 GM trucks can be bent inward fairly easy with a strong arm or foot pressure, far enough to un-hook the club..

The steering wheel on my '77 GMC felt like that had been done to it--it also felt like the steel "core" was not a full circle,it felt like it had a gap or seam in it that was not welded together,or maybe it broke when someone forced against it..

Also I heard the steel they made the Club from is super hard,so a hacksaw will not cut it..but hardened steel can be brittle,I guess a well placed kick can bust the club in two..

The same tweaker who sawzalled your catalytic convertor off is the same tweaker who will sawzall your wheel club off.

The last beater car I bought had a club and the key was supposed to be in the glove box, which I didnt check and I locked the club on. Luckily I was at home an sawzalled it off in a non tweaker fashion.

If it's stick shift put a padlock on the clutch and brake pedal. I used to never have a top on my jeep and that's how I would leave, if I was real worried the t case also went in neutral.

For secure interior storage, get a Tuffy center console and / or a lockable metal tool box for the rear. It will discourage folks from picking up your stuff and walking away with it. I hate replacing my bluegrass CD's.

I got the Lock IT system for the steering column....it gives a measure of confidence but not enough for me to let it out of my sight.
I like the idea of removing the steering wheel...just need to see if they have one for 1974.
removing the steering wheel would prevent the theft of opportunity...it would not deter the guy who is casing your rig and knows that you remove your steering wheel....he can just bring one.

That's why I think "defense in depth" is the best....steering column lock, remove steering wheel and have a kill switch...multiple deterents give you most time.

However...what are you gonna do if somebody decides to flatbed it away?

Just checking, the fuse to pull to disable the motor would be the ECM1 fuse?

('88 TBI)

Anyhoo, I'm doing this for tonight, until I can figure out something better. lol.

Yes, ECM fuse will do it. Fuel pump fuse won't IIRC, since it's got the oil pressure switch that will bypass the relay with enough cranking.

I recommended REPLACING the fuse with a bad one though, as it's very easy and quick to spot an empty fuse slot. A blown fuse will take too much time to figure out. Not sure if any other ones can be pulled to kill it, perhaps IGN? You can always try starting with the respective fuse removed to test.
