Can anyone show examples of any DIY side steps or running boards they made to fit the '67-72 trucks? Maybe you re-purposed some from an old truck or jeep, or maybe they were made from scrap steel you had laying around.

Here is a vic hickey step that i pulled off the Jimmy.

Since i guess nobody has photos of fabricated steps, can anyone advise if any standard steps or runningboards made for another truck will bolt up securely to ours? I looked at my jeep, but our frame rail is more inboard than the jeep, so their mounting brackets wont reach it to mount securely. i dont want to go just into the sheet metal rocker box there.

sorry, its something I've been meaning to do, but just never got around to it. I'll be interested in whatever you come up with though, so post pics. :)

you'll find most guys in here dislike running boards..... most times guys are doing rock sliders, actually cutting them up into the body.. but there are some bolt-on's out there, they hang a bit lower, and some have foot stepping cutouts to em... try kert over at DIY4X

I opted for recessed sliders, entry wasn't a concern...

Side steps are the first thing you should REMOVE from a truck....a wheeler at least.

Every other upgrade is typically to improve clearance and break over angle. Putting a side step on, places a huge obstacle in exactly the wrong place.

How tall is your truck? Are you a short guy? I'm trying to figure out the motivation..... I'm only 5'9" and I can get into my truck (6" lift and 38's) without too much effort.

yeah, for me its cool, but my girl bitches about climbing up into it, so wont ride in it, and my 75 year old father goes with me on trips out to Long Island and he cant climb up without me pulling up close to my front stoop and him stepping off the side of the stoop. When we get out there, there is a wooden picnic bench that he steps down to.

yup, thats the issue I have, although I agree with greg, so never got around to putting some on.

if I can, I'd like to find something high enough not to be much of an issue, but still helps get you into the truck. as I've stated before, I'm leaning more towards comfort these days. I've been to moab plenty, and I'm more inclined to trail riding these days.

It may sound silly but what about just keeping a small folding stool behind the passenger seat? If they don't ride with you that often anyway it might not be that inconvenient to deal with...

i think that's brilliant... tho i suppose i might feel a bit silly setting it up for my woman in a Wally World parking lot... :haha:

I keep a milk crate in mine for the girlfriend, comes in handy for storage and stuff too sometimes. 75 Blazer 5" lift,35's

I guess I'll chime in on this as well, although my idea is far from being anything but that...

I wanted to try to come up with some type of fold down step that when not in use would tuck up close and tight against the sliders and was held there with a spring or gas strut. Then if you put pressure on it it could extend down/out to help the shorties into the truck.

I don't have much more than the idea going on at the moment, or how to deploy such an idea. One option I had thought about and need to look at deeper is the rear helper step off a mid-90's LR Discovery. They had a step that tucked up against the rear bumper and was isolated with rubber bumpers but would swing down if you put pressure on it. I was going to see if that was doable without killing clearance/functionality of the sliders. I'll probably just tell people to deal with it in the end though:haha:

Edit: My other sweet idea, although my fab skills are nowhere near this yet is making a step that swings down out of the slider like the steps that are in the wing root of an F-18! It'd be wicked cool, but I have no idea how to make that work.

It's a pic of a model but it's the best I could find:doah: Anyways, something similar that would hide up in the slider would be sweet IMHO

not fabricated, but the steps on my dads truck are nice, full length, and electrically swing up when the door closes. Completely hidden and out of the way. You might have to spend the $$$ here.

once you get that figured out, I'll buy a set from ya. :D

That won't be for a while... at least until we're not in la la land, um I mean Hawaii anymore:haha:

I have a decent idea for the main portion of the ladder itself, I just need to figure out two things:
1. How to make sure it doesn't rattle (I HATE rattles!)
2. How to get it to flip back up once you're in the truck, which I also have an idea on but nothing that I'm sure about.

Who knows, maybe we'll move and I'll have a stroke of genius:dunno:

well, from the sounds of your other thread, you'll have some extra time on your hands to work on it.
