Looking for some second opinions

I didn't realize shackle flips and towing was such a big subject! But everyone's opinion is considerable, although some say do and some say don't. But if Dodge is using compression shackle set up on their new trucks it should be safe to tow with shackle flips then, right? Or would some of you disagree?

My feeling is that ORD has been selling the flips for many years now. You notice there is not a towing disclaimer on their website in regards to the flips. I think if it was really an issue they would have some serious data and experience to illustrate it now.

This is straight from their site:
  • Load carrying ability is also a common question. Basically, if you keep the factory overloads, you won’t have any trouble. We've designed the shackle angle to retain as much load carrying ability as possible with a lifted 4wd.
  • There is no more lateral lateral motion of the vehicle than with the stock tension shackle bushing setup. It may look as if the axle could move side to side easier, but the only thing that puts more leverage on the bushings is the additional ride height, which you also gain with blocks or lift springs.

I run Tuff Country 4" HD front springs in my truck. I have a 150lbs of bumper & winch on the front of my truck. They have broken in & sagged some since I installed them. I use them pretty hard though. I do not run a swaybar & I have never looked back since I took it off years ago with my softer 2.5" springs.

For the rear I am presonally a fan of a lift spring verse a shackle flip. They both work well but I like my rear lift springs better then a shackle flip. My truck runs 4" front springs w/1" zero rate, & 6" springs rear springs that I cut the overload on. It works pretty well offroad. Just don't remove one of the leaves to lower the truck though cause you take away alot of integrity & you will probably hurt the rear springs (ask me how I know) :doah:

Personally for lift springs I recommend BDS first and then TC second.

Well I think I have come to a conclusion... I will get the Tuff Country 4" HD springs for the front and run the shackle flip in the rear. My understanding is the only difference between the HD and EZ is an extra leaf. So going with the HD will give me more flexibility if I think the ride is too stiff. I believe the towing with flips will be ok because I hear Dodge is using basically the same set up on their new trucks. And as MrK5 pointed out, ORD states on their site the shackle flips will tow just as much weight as you could safely tow with rear blocks or any other lift.

Your front springs will be stiff at first. You need to give them ample time to break in before you get hasty and remove the last leaf. Mine ride alot better now then they did after I installed them.

Thanks Harley. Yea my springs i have now ride better than they did at first. I was just saying... I think that would be a good setup, especially if i go with an aftermarket bumper later down the road.
