Hi guys, hey I was muckin around on my 88 k5 6.2 stock vehicle apart from RHD conversion, up behind the dash and screwed onto the windsheild demister plastic thing, there apears to be a computer, I have no idea what this would run :doah:have any of you seen or know what this is for??

pics? heard of ecm's for the electronic Q jets but never heard of one in a diesel before. that year should have a non electronic transmission too.

I'll try and get a pic tomorrow, and yeah it's only a TH700R4 so I didn't think they had any comp stuff as well, and it's always been a diesel, it's common down here for wankers to take out the diesels and put a gas gobblin short block in them but this is bog stock
cheers

Maybe a wiper delay module for intermittent wipers??..or for the A/C heater controls?..

I'll get some pics today guys, it looks like a fairly sizable unit, I hope it aint one of Big Brothers trackin devices hahaha

Looks a lot like a TBI computer to me, but is it really hooked to anything anymore? This is looking at the dash from the right side of the truck correct? Right drive conversion? If so, that is approximately the location it would be in. On left drive trucks it is above and behind the glove box area...

some factory computer deal.

possible for lockup use on 700r4 tranny. ?

and if possible can we get more right hand drive pics for our pic colection.

I think I'll bite the bullet and pull the thing out and see if any part numbers etc, according to the vin numbersthis vehicle came from the factory (Flint) with the diesel so shouldnt have any petrol gear in it - got me beat, if it turns out to be a TBI comp, it should be new and unused, you wana buy it Rene?? :haha:

I removed it and had a quick google session, it is definately some sort of computer, I had a look at these guys site http://westersgarage.eidnet.org/finding.htm
and they sort of list it, but only with a 6.5 turbo, it is definately wired in from the factory not some doggy hack job, ahh well as long as the vehicle starts etc who cares right?? the numbers on it are Service No 1228012 ALFN (the ALFN is also on the Eprom inside) the below these numbers are 864645M821284003

That's a ECM.

GM PART # 88999160
CATEGORY: Emission Control System Hardware

The 1228012 would denote the model ECM. WINALDL dosent support it but that would make sense if it was a diesel.

Man thats a lot of comp for emission control huh?? I'll refit it and then be evil and disconect all the sh!tty emission control stuf from the manifolds etc hahaha, cheers for the input dude

Well I think when they say Emissions they mean every thing from the coolent temp sensor and beyond. Diesel motors aren't my thing so I dunno what all would be on one that needed controlled by the ECM. Guessing somewhat the same thing that is controlled on a Carb motor.

Yeah I think your prob right man, I was thnkin last night that maybe it contrlos the whole lot - cold idle, emission control, converter lock up, it all seems to work ok so back in it goes, couldn't find one on my 85 or on the 81, and the old 73 I have is a hack job by some retard ex petrol engine and would have been a carb job etc cheers mate take it easy

It likely only controls the EGR, as that is about the only emissions part on a mechanically injected 6.2. What input's it uses, I don't know.
