Is it possible to have a loose u-joint? Is it normal? What can it cause?

When we put the conversion joint on the axle end of the rear driveshaft, I noticed that the other u joint (t case end) seemed to move pretty freely, almost too free. Is this normal?

You mean Normal movement of the U-joint? I think that would be no big deal. As long as there is no play up down and side to side inside the caps. Hook up the driveshaft and put the truck in N. You shouldnt be able to move the driveshaft up and down or side to side at all.

did the caps slide in and out freely? or the joint moving isnde the caps?
It just seemed like it moved way to easily, with no resistance at all. I can`t tell about the caps, as the U joint is still in the shaft. It was the end with the slip yoke on it...

Like the slipyoke just flopped around? Mine was doing that, pulled the joint out, and the needle bearings were all flat

Yeah, when I pulled the rear shaft out, the slip yoke was just flopping around, banging off the yoke, with absolutely no resistance...

i think you just got a good broke in u-joint smooth motion in the normal directions is ok. nothin abnormal as in side to side slop moving inside the caps laterally. tight caps and no slack won't hurt nothin.
