My '84 K5 Blazer has 305cid, 700r, mechanical fuel pump. The truck has 165k on it, but one of the shops doesnt think its org. motor. It has GM performance sticker/valve covers and the dip stick tube is on the drivers side, I guess trucks of this year have them on the pass. side. so not sure. Havent ran the motor vin yet.

Anyways............it has developed a weird ticking/knocking sound. Cant seem to figure it out.

I just changed the oil a few weeks ago, it started soon after that. I thought it might be exhaust gasket, so I changed out the header gasket, wasnt it. Pulled valve covers, check, everything fine there. Pulled all the belts off and fired up truck , still ticking.

Here is the weird part, when I first fire up the truck, it wont do it, but after 30 seconds or so, the sound will start out faint and then get a lil louder and then stay. If I rev motor, it goes away or maybe I just cant hear it, lol.

It seems to be more noticeable on the passenger side. When I put the A/C on , it goes away (load on motor). When I put it in gear while its ticking at idle, itll go away a lil bit.

One forums suggested flex plate, another suggested crank pulley, so have no idea, dont want to throw parts at it. so far been checking the things I can for free.

Other then the ticking at idle (which is not normal), truck runs fine, no smoke, no sputtering, runs like it always have. Jus weird that it would make noise after 30 seconds of running.

One shop and even seen on the 'net, was saying the oil filter, I had a Puralator Pure One, but went a head and swapped it out for an AC Delco (was given to me for free), so didnt hurt anything. I always fill the filter before engine start up on oil changes and always use the correct amount.

Some things I thought about but not sure;

Mechanical fuel pump ? but it runs fine, holds 6-9 psi

Something under the timing cover ?

Exhaust leak, but it doesnt really mimic an exhaust sound.

The ticking/knocking sound is metallic for sure.

I had a mechanical fuel pump start making intermittent clattering noises on my '72 K5 (350 engine)...thought it was the timing chain hitting the cover, but a friend listened with his mechanics stethascope and said to him it sounded like the fuel pump..

The pump was working OK as far as running the engine, pressure was within limits--it would just clatter every so often, usually worst when first started up cold, and if you pinched off the fuel line to the carb,it would stop clattering ,until it ran out of fuel and stalled..

--I removed it and found the spring on its rocker arm had busted, and let the arm flop around loosely,it was also "missing" ,part of it fell into the block casting,I only found some of it with a magnet.. --I replaced the pump,no more noise...(I also found out later someone had replaced the timing chain & gears with a double roller Cloyes setup,so I was glad I didn't just tear it apart ..I had already bought a chain & gears for it!)..

Flex plates often do crack and end up making noises that are hard to pin down, they do sound a lot like lifters or exhaust leaks..sometimes you can get them to stop momentarily as you put it in gear,or rev or let off the gas...

I have had a wrist pin in a 454 clatter only while driving around 35 mph..loud enough to make me nervous about trusting it too far from home..after I found a good 400SB to swap in it ,I sold the 454 to a friend, who rebuilt it before putting it in his ramp truck--said the #7 wrist pin was "sloppy",but he didn't see anything else wrong inside it..

You might have a bent push rod or a rocker arm getting ready to fail...another possibility is a cam lobe is going flat, and the lifter can no longer pump up enough to remove all the valve lash,so it ticks...

I have seen a few torque converters make strange clattering noises like bad lifters too...

I had the push rod for the mech. fuel pump bend one time, and it caused some awful noises. Replaced it, and the noise went away. Not sure how it happened.

Start simple. Have you pulled the valve covers and checked the valves? Start eliminating simple things first. Then start speculating. Another good tool is an old school engine stethoscope. Saved my bacon more than once

Thanks guys, been tinkering all day,,,i pulled dust shield for torque converter, flex / flywheel looks brand new, all bolts snug. I had a spare mech fuel pump that came with the truck when I bought it 15 years ago. It was in a box, so I decided why not,,i have no idea how old the one on it is, etc.

So, I swapped out the fuel pump, replaced the short rubber lines for new and put it all together.

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!

no more knock/ticking and my Fuel pressure when from 3lb-6lbs to 6lbs-9lbs and the truck seems smoother and likes the increase fuel pressure.

Well there goes your excuse for a new crate motor

lol..at some point in the far future, ill have a 350 crate motor , backed up to a monster transmission and dynatrack high pinion axles,..............

Cool. Glad you got it figured out.
