so i have a cousin who scored a stick shift 6 speed from a camaro / firebird / trans am LS car . he has the whole drive line engine to trans and wants to just use the trans in his older c10 truck .

he was wondering what parts he would need to swap it behind his carb sbc 1 piece rear main seal block ? and his block has the 7th hole so he will be able to use all the bolt holes on the bell housing .

truck in question is a 62 c-10 with a 73-87 front clip swapped in and a 10 bolt rear also . nothing crazy on power just a clean cruiser .

As far as I understand, it depends on the flywheel height from the bellhousing flange dimension. I have no clue what an LS1 has. I think that he would be smart to do the research himself with what he has on hand, rather than rely on the internet.

Not sure why he doesn't leave the engine and 6 speed connected to each other, but not my truck.

he has a perfect running driving vortec 350 engine and just dont want all the LS electric stuff . . . i might end up with the 5.7LS for my 2 WHEEL BURN project . :cool1: :burnout:

Buy him a Tremec kit to fit his truck, and you take the ls and t56. Win-win

T56 in my 1995 z28 was the best transmission I’ve ever driven. Pure sex. I could get 4mpg in the city with a heavy foot, or I could get 31-32mpg all day long cruising down the highway. 6th gear is a deeper (taller? -whatever means more overdrive) overdrive gear than 5th. Shifted/ just felt perfect. I looked into using that trans in a 2wd truck several times- would seem they are rated for lots of horsepower and torque (they were used in vetted and vipers), but not the best choice for a heavy vehicle or anything that will Tow.

After my Camaro was broadsided by a Jeep, I spent a year looking for a replacement. I drove several newer Camaro’s with the LS motor and was never much impressed in stock form… Also something about the t56 behind the LS was different. I believe you can swap bell housings or do something to get one or the other behind each motor… But the ones that came behind the LS did not shift or feel the same.

Also the Lt1 t-56 had an external slave? That ls1 t56 prob has an internal one- I think if he found one used it would be prudent to put a new slave in before using the trans again? Any manual trans I’ve owned has gone thru a slave or 2. How pissed would I have been if I had to pull the whole driveline to get to it!?

c-10 for him just a 2wd cruiser and no trailer work .

he is just looking for options for his daily driver and few years a trip up here to visit for 7hr each way .

Iirc, the LS style T56 will go onto a conversion bellhousing from Quick Time and mount to a standard small or big block. I had researched it some when I was looking for a T56 for my '79 Camaro. I wound up with an LT style T56 so it didn't matter.

so i emailed 1 of the big trans shops for these units and just a swap kit from them except drive shaft and cross membmber and shifter kit to clean bench seat is 2,500 before tax and shipping .

i dont think my cousin is going to wana drop that much and stuff be carb sbc . that point just LS swap it with the engine thats bolted to it .
