There are plates under the motor mounts that a steel rod comes off them to the bottom of the lower torque converter cover. My question is are these steel rods important? I'm guessing not but figured I'd ask

They help support the lower part of the transmission.
The aluminum bellhousing with only 3/4 of the circumference connected is prone to breaking with the tcase twisting it, so it could use the help

Well here's the issue... With the 5.3 motor mount adapters they don't really work.... Anyone figure out a way to do this?

I would personally figure out a way to make it work, but that up to you.

There isn't any practical way to make the rods work that I have found.

It is important to support the bottom part of the bellhousing because you can only use 5 of the 6 bolts. The best thing that I have found when mixing old and new is to use a 4l80e dust cover (15765623). With that cover you will be able to use the bolts in the oil pan. The cover requires some trimming to clear the trans pan but it does work.

What flexplate are you using? That combination will require a flat flexplate and spacer from a 4l80/6.0l combination. You probably already know but just want to throw that out there for anyone else doing this swap.

I bought a flex plate that was for this exact combo so it's dished plus it came with the spacer. I'll check out the dust cover you mentioned
