Lumber Rack pic post - Let's see 'em!

My rack is square tube. As you can see, the rear crossbar just slides down into a square socket. It has 4 ratcheting straps, with hooks for tie downs. One crossbar at 7'11", one at 10', and the front is at 14'. I have hauled close to 1500 lbs of lumber and roofing on it, with no ill effects.

Those ratchetcing straps are sexy! ... wonder if I can get them for round-tubed racks (wonder how they'd work... hmm.. )

Edit: yep, one can get them for round tube. Weld-on or bolt-through, judging from the holes. Ain't cheap though, like $120 for a pair!

Trust me, these straps are worth the money!!!!!! No more hunting ropes, bungees, or even tie down straps. Just pull em out, and hook together.

Well, the hunting thing is mitigated by toolboxes ... but yeah, having them RIGHT THERE just seems clever... sigh. Should prolly focus on putting the motor in first.

Well I've got most of it done, just need to add the removeable crossbars and throw on some attachment points. Already holds a lot more firewood though. :D

Now, THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!

See, I don't just don't get wheeling with a sixpack ... they're too dang big. But for towing, moving-stuff, general work-horses ... you can't beat 'em. They carry more stuff, dogs, cats, wives, etc than even a Burb =))

Although, you can't beat wheelbase on a hill climb. I've backed this thing further up a bank than a buddy that was locked w/ 42" iroks. :p: He couldn't see why, but I thought it was funny. :D

You sure can't beat them for a work truck though. I had two chainsaws and all the rest of the gear on the floor in the back, with the seat left over for the dog. Gotta love how much crap you can throw in there. That's a LOT of wood too, way more than any little 1/2 ton should be hauling, and it wasn't really squatted down in the back either. 454 still pulled the hills too. It's hard to beat this truck for the money.

To dredge up a slightly old post, I just moved my spare up to the rack, as it was blocking the front too much hanging on the bumper.

And of course one must have a co-ordinated cover (I looove Ebay!)

Piece of spare tube near the front, random bit of C-channel for the carrier, cut up some old lug studs, and voila, instant spare tire mount. :D Be a bit of a PITA getting it down, but hey, with a dually you're carrying two spares down at ground level anyway :haha:

Next up I think I wanna do a coupla strobe beacons on the corners.

Balzer
Thanks ... when it works it works well :D

Pass anything but a gas station, and sure, it can fit into a "COMPACT" parking space, as long as there's a football field *around* said space :haha:

...but I wouldn't trade it for much of anything. :deal:

And Steve K, you're right -- it is rare that I would make comments about another man's rack, but Eric indeed has a nice one. Several, in fact. :D

That's it! I *knew* I saw it in ONE of these posts, but musta missed that pic! Thank you for the inspiration.

I see we both independently stuck it off to the passenger side -- great minds think alike. I was figgerring it to be curbside if I do need to take it off, plus it gives more room for long stuff (lumber, pipe, whatever) if it's on one side instead of centered.

Whilst doing some other small welding stuff, I finally got around to capping off the removable rear crossbar. I also labelled the sides so that I can put it back without having to check the camo pattern :doah: :haha:

that notably is the passenger side, and the driver's side has a bloody great L welded into it. I think even I can avoid screwing it up.

The kicker is that those clevis pins are at an angle, so the crossmember only fits one way ... this way it's harder for me to get it wrong, and hafta take the dang thing down while balancing on the bumper and loading up whatever is in the truck :D
