Havent yet, but I plan to buy a 12v gear reduction off ebay and just convert the truck to 12v. Seen em on there for ~95 bucks.

i thought about doing that 2 but im not sure, it just mite b easier to just get the correct one...but i duno...

just asked how to change it from 24 to 12, thanks k20......much appreciated..

There's a guy on SteelSoldiers selling a 24v starter. I don't have the 15 posts needed to post URLs, though.

My starter went out last winter. I have a 24v system but my starter was 12v. Had it rebuilt to 12v the guy who rebuilt it said it would be fine. No problems so far.

Spins the starter twice as fast. Not good in the long term but some folks don't mind changing starters so it all depends on your idea of "no problem".

ill spend the time and convert it with a new 12volt starter..ill do it this weekend

I read your thread about 24V to 12V conversion so this is kind of a mute point that may better serve for future reference. I had my starter rebuilt for $80 but it was in pretty good shape. The reason some people like the 24V system is because it has more juice to turn the starter. And on a diesel, that is a good idea. Maybe I am just to lazy to convert to 12V system but I think it works fine just the way it is and don't really understand why people do the conversion.

If you read the instruction sheet it gives the pros and cons to the conversion. From a strictly $$ standpoint, it can be cheaper to go to common 12V components in the long run is one of the big ones.

More power to you. It's all personal preference.

My starter was shot so was one of my alternators. I really dont have the cash to get them both redone, here they dont redo them much at all .The starter i was told that 200 will fix it and 200 for the alt, both of mine are toast thats y it was done and with the 12 now it starts just as good a( i have 20.00 invested), 400 or 20..? Right now 20 sounds better to me, if i had 400 to waste on my truck then maybe.....sorry if it sounds like im being smart but its my daily driver and i couldnt wait to get the funds..Way too much going on and too close to xmas, to spend it on that i couldnt.... i still have all the parts so one day i could change it back but for now its gota stay like this......... rob

Ill say this much , i changed out the one tons and put in 3/4 tons with 4:10 gears, added 4inch and 35s..i haul coal 2 ton ( saves me 125 a trip) at a time and 4 times a year, i changed it to a 4 headlight rad, sliding window, tinted glass, cd player, painted it flat black ...its real good on fuel like 18 or better .....i did the 12 volt so in a pinch the 12volt parts are easy to come by and to save the cash to work on the house or put towards other things much needed...... i thank everyone ten times over for the help on here...greatly appreciated...

you got my full attention, i printed it all out, did what it said and drove the sheit out of it this week..lol.. thanks a bunch...

When my stuff gives me a reason to fix it I'll definitely go to 12 volt. A 6.5L gear reduction starter with a life time warranty from NAPA or Advanced Auto is cheaper than any 24v starter you can find online and ditto for the alternators. A guy over on SS just did a conversion using standard GM 12v high amp alternators so why not? Skip the 24v BS and it's expenses.
