does anyone have measurements for the ball that is on the M1009 (probly all CUCV's) pintle ball trailer hitch?

mine dosnt close all the way, so the safty latch dosnt fall into place. Im thinking the previous owner may have put in a bigger ball, and that could be causing it, but im not sure how to check this, or fix it.

my friends and i are talking about taking one of their pop up trailers camping, and her FJ cruiser dosnt have a trailer hitch so we were planning on using my truck, but i dont think its safe if that latch dosnt fall into place.

..............*crickets*..................

to the internet..... that may explain the problem right there.

I'm with Chimpo... The only pintle hooks I've seen with balls were sold at the local ranch supply store. Never saw one on M-series. Doesn't mean they don't exist, but...

Every military trailer I've seen that would be pulled by one of these used a simple ring to attach to the pintle, no coupler to attach to a ball.

IIRC, the pintle on the CUCV's -- and I sold mine or I'd go and look at it -- is JUST a pintle, not a pintle + ball like you see on big trucks. The ring on the trailers is a "lunette", btw.

For a regular trailer, you're gonna want to get a regular receiver hitch and a normal ball setup. The pintle, btw, is somewhat easily removed, and replaced with a stock license plate holder (from a Burb or Blazer at the junkyard.)

ill go out tomorrow and take a picture tomorrow and post it up. ive looked online at pics, but dont get any real good looks at the hitch, i might run over to steelsoldiers and ask someone to post up.

im thinkin maybe the PO might have swapped out the military pintle hitch for this one with a ball, but that wouldnt explain why the hitch dosnt close all the way as if the ball was too big.......

The guys are right. The military doesn't use a ball. Must have been swapped out by PO ;)

well that answers that, im guessing its a civilian class 3 hitch or something. i still have to go buy a smaller ball for it so the darned thing will latch closed.

How far is it from being closed?
You do know that if you are using the ball part of the hitch the top part stays open and you just use the latch on the trailer to hold it on, right.
So if you are using the ball all you need to do is get the correct size ball for the trailer coupler.

oh.... i forgot there was a latch on the ball receiver itself. i may have to get a replacement ball anyway, i think the one i have is going to be bigger than the one on her pop up trailer, as i recall those are pretty small.

but yeah, i thought even with the ball the latch needed to lock in place. can you tell i dont trailer much ;)

im pretty sure most ball receivers are of the 2 inch type.messure the trl latch for fitment before wasting 10 bucks on the wrong ball.good luck and happy camping

Some of them are 1 7/8" also. The size of the coupler will be stamped into the top of the trailer tongue (coupler), if you can read it. A 2" coupler will fit on a 1 7/8" ball and latch but it isn't safe to haul.
