M1010 K30 -- Budget build (Back from the dead and considering 54" springs...)

beat, where???
I thought I fixed all dent last time I polished the paint, i must have missed one :doah::D

Btw there will probably come a new video any day now.
I hunted moose last week, and a friend shot some films when I extracted some of them.
I'm just waiting for him to send them to me.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead :)

It seems I forgot to post the promised video from last years moose hunt :doah:
It has really crappy quality though :o

But now to some more recent activity...
The winch motor that I thought I waterproofed so well, turned out to be a pretty badly rusted inside when I needed it the most:mad:

But I found a new motor that's supposed to be IP68 proof :waytogo:

Then I decided to do something about the bedsides...
They were so badly rusted, I risked them falling of by themselves.
So I took preventive measures and cut them all off :D

I like the Kaiser M715 look it got :pimp:

Then it was time for hunting season again, and i got a reason to do some sanctioned wheeling again :D
Here it is backed up at the slaughterhose for unloading of a days catch.

Our moose quota was pretty low this year though, due to the establishment of a wolf pack in the area

I had a little mishap with the front driveshaft during the hunt...
I had to change the u-joint, and managed to crack an ear on the yoke while doing so :o
But I welded the ear together again and tack-welded the caps as a temporary fix...
And it holds together so far at least, after a couple of more days of hunting

Love the "new bed" look. Looks awesome actually. Have you seen in one of the recent mags where they use a military trailer as the bed? Similar look and super tuff.

Thanks guys!
I haven't seen the military trailer bed, but I think I can picture it :waytogo:
I have been thinking of building a new bed with a square tube "frame" and wooden sides :woot:
But that will probably not happen until this one falls off by itself

It's been done a bunch of times. That was just the first good pic I found.

Subscribed! Awesome cucv :thumb:

How are your front shock towers holding up? That seems like an easy way to get clearance around the steering shaft.

Thanks! The shock towers works fine.
But it was a little tricky to get the left one to clear the steering shaft.
I had to cut them off and weld them with a slight angle inwards.
But then I had some issues with clearance between the shock and the lower part of the tower :doah:
But I finally got it right :woot:

Hi guys!
It's been a while!

The truck has mainly been sitting for the last few years
Partly because it rides so crappy on the road...
So I'm thinking about swapping out the 56" springs in the front.

The front hanger is moved the "usual" 4" forwards.
But because of how the K30 frame is designed, I needed to use crazy long shackles, as you might remember.
(I was too lazy to move the rear mount...)
And those shackles are probably the big reason behind the crappy handling.
That the pinion angle sucks at full droop is just the icing on the cake.

For 52" springs I guess I would probably need to move the rear hanger, to get reasonable articulation...?
Besides, good used 52s are hard to find over here.

I'm still to lazy to move the rear hanger, so I'm thinking about getting 54" springs from an S10...
Has anyone tried that on a K30,
and can share some insight?

Some preliminary measuring says I would probably be able to shorten the shackles from 8.25" to 6.25", or something like that.
But I think I would prefer them even shorter...

well the spring in the picture is bent so it's nfg. What is the length of each half of the 56" spring to center pin ? Does the S10 54" have the center pin at 22"
stock is 47" 23.5 ea. The S10 springs will put the axle close to center an Easy inch would it back to stock centering. Yeah the shorter hanger would be a good thing.

Looking kinda sad in that house stall

Yeah, the driver side spring is shot, it's a risk when running without spring clamps.

Iirc the 54" springs are not centered, and the short side is 26", just like the 56" springs.
So the axle would sit exactly where it is now.
I'm just not sure if it's worth it, since I'll still need pretty long shackles...

But someone has to be the guinnea pig i guess..:D

Correct the s10 are 25 and 13/32 short side 28 19/32 long side. Those measurements look like metric conversions.
At least the front drive shaft should still fit.

I ran 52” springs on the front with the shackle hangers in the stock location. Drove 85mph down the interstate.

Damn! I wouldnt want to go faster than 30mph with mine, as it is now :o

It obviously worked awesome on the road, but how did it perform offroad for you?

I have considered 52" springs as well, but I'm concerned that it would affect the offroad capability too much, unless I move the shackle mounts.

I assume the shackles was pretty close to vertical at max compression?
How long shackles did you use?
