I got a line on an M1010 ambulance. Is this worth getting if I'm gonna swap the cab to get rid of the hole or is it too much trouble?

What would be a good price for a running, fairly light rust one?

Thanks for any opinions.

depends on price, what can you get it for? the ambulances have the upgraded charging system (bigger better alternator), they also got the 60/14b with detroit. depending on milage and condition id say maybe between $2-4k. might be able to get it for cheaper since most people dont wana drive around an ambulance. i almost bought a m1010 with the plan to get a regular cab to put on it, but ended up not doing it.

I got the two M1008's I have for 1K each but they didnt run and one was missing the trans and case.If you can get it for anything reasonable, get it.

I say go for it if its feasable for you. If its cheap enough, and decide you dont want it, just resell it, or swap some different axles underneath and then resell it. Either way, a good deal is a good deal. Thats kinda what happened when I stumbled onto my m1008.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the opinions and info. I haven't seen it yet but the guy said he'd take 2500 for it. I'm going to go check it out tomorrow.

I asked him if it had any problems and he said the dash was cracked. So I'm hoping that this thing is in pretty good shape. 29,000 miles.

How in depth are cab swaps? It seems so easy til I start thinking about wiring and stuff on the firewall and linkages and such.

cab swaps are relatively easy; especially if you use an m1008 cab or such. the only real problems are if you use a 2wd cab or one with a/c.

There was one on www.SteelSoldiers.com a while back where a guy was buying it. PO had removed the box, built a flat bed, and grafted a completely new back half of the cab on. Could barely tell it was done. Nice work but there's stories of bootyfab fixes.

M1010's have an odd alternator setup. Different than the rest of the CUCV's with their twin alt setups. Something to do with the AC system and such. Potential problem for some.

I'd really like to find a silverado cab and swap that on the chassis. If I could get the bed too, I'd have a nice daily driver.

Should have just bought one of these to start with and left my 1/2 ton as a daily driver.

This will be nice to tow my other truck with anyway.

Picked it up today. Only blew one trailer tire on the way home. I don't think I did too bad for $2400.

After driving this thing I may keep the back on it. It even has a heater in the back that runs off the fuel tank like a kerosene heater.

I'll try to grab some pics tomorrow for ya'll. I'm gonna have some wiring questions , too.

Thanks again.
