Would one of these two tranies be a good swap im my truck (sm465)
I want a quicker trany. I came up with this questions because of an article I was reading.

Or are there other good " quicker" tranies I could swap that would bolt up? Any suggestions to go with my 454.

those are car trannies... i had a M22 (rockcrusher) in one of my Chevelles, and a bunch of M21's... M21 is actually a more streetable box... M22's are pretty freakin rare too.. i got big coin for mine...

sorry, i got sidetracked.... :doah:

but no, they wont work afaik... unless you went to a divorced t-case.. and even then i doubt it would be a wise choice for a 4 wd truck...

NV4500 is generally the upgrade to the dumptruck-like shifting of a 465...

The m-21 would work fine in your 2wd truck unless your hauling a lot of weight as its designed for a car. M-21 is a close ratio and m-20 is the wide ratio. M-22 was a big block corvette trans with straight cut first gear and a close ratio.

You could always go with a 2wd NV4500, I`ve seen a few around for sale. I have a few Muncie`s, and thought the NV would be a cool way to go. You might even get away with a NV3500, but I haven`t heard good things.

The NV4500 isn't the smoothest tranny either. The 3500 shifts really nice, but it's not bulletproof. Killed one in a stock 4.8L truck, not really abused. If you aren't going to get stupid with it, I think an NV3500 could probably live a pretty long life, just watch the clutch drops. Probably the best choice for a street truck, IMHO.

i would consider a t56 from a firebird/camaro. you could probably get one for less than a m21 or m22. then have overdrive. 2 of them actually. i would condsider them at least as strong as a nv3500.

m22 will be $1500 min.
m21/m20 $800 for a working one. $1500 for a rebuilt one. but you dont have a core. a core is $500

guess thats not bad that i got $800 for my 22 in about 1990...

Low gear in a car tranny will be similar to the SM 465's second gear. Everything after that will be a lot nicer as the ratios are a lot closer, the car tranny's shift a lot faster/smoother and you have an extra gear in the mix.

I'd look into the T56 or similar. It'll cost the same and you'll get OD while you're at it.

This is why im asking. I am going to be pulling 350 hp out of this 454 to wake it up a little bit. I am never going to haul anything with it again. It will be driven 1 day a week at the most. 30 miles or so. Only in the summer. I wanted a quicker smoother trani. More like a car. This truck wont be used as a truck.

And that's good to know about the bench seat.
The t56 with over drive sounds good.

just be prepared for whatever you do to require some custom work.. fabbing a x-member, modded shaft, etc... it wont be a straight bolt-in, other than the gearbox to motor...

And for the car trans you need to either buy a new bell housing (i always like scattershields in my stick shifts) and a new clutch disc at minimum, or an adapter ring to make our bellhosuings opening smaller to correctly fit the smaller diameter car trans.

Advanced Adapters used to sell a kit to swap a Muncie car 4 speed into a GM 4x4,I was very tempted to put one in my 72 K5 I had back in the 90's..I have read about GM using a close ratio NP435 tranny in some 4WD trucks, and a Clark 5 speed in 60's trucks, but I've yet to see one in person...

The statement about the bellhousings is correct,so you'll need a car bellhousing or blowsheild to put in a 4 speed car trans...A Borg Warner T-10 would be a decent tranny, and might be available cheaper than a Muncie--the Saginaw 4 speeds weren't all that bad either really..I had a friend who owned a 1982 C-10 with a 250 six that used to be a telephone Co. fleet truck,it came factory with a 5 speed tranny that was the same one Chevy used in the Monza's!..light duty at beast,it had the shifter integrated with the tail shaft..but that truck would get 22 mpg on the highway and the tranny had good "spacing" between the gears--no winding out, then bogging, like the SM465's...I know another guy who put a 4 speed top loader from a 70's mustang in his 70's GMC 2wd truck--beleive it or not GM and Ford used the same trannies some years, both 3 and 4 speeds, and they were practically a bolt in swap...

dont forget the chyrsler a833 4 speed with overdrive trans that the 80s trucks got, essentially a car trans with 1-2-3-od and of course reverse. Mid 80s chevies got ordered with them from the factory.

I worked on one of these for a guy, hydro clutch, bench seat, 2wd loaded. I saw it for sale a few yrs later for $400, didn`t buy it. Doh!

The t56 is far stronger than a nv3500 for the record.

If your going to look at spending the money on a new tranny just go with a TKO600 and never look back. It comes in numerous rations both geared for cars with an overdrive and a 600ftlb input rating for $1500...

Thats the trans my olds is getting next winter.
