m20 m22 tranies

Super T-10 and don't worry about the M22. The M22 is expensive and unless doing a complete restoration on a factory correct car i wouldnt invest in one. My buddy and i replaced a M20 with a super t-10 years ago and he was very happy with it. He alo used the centerforce clutch and some weird hurst shifter i have never seen since. Dang thing did shift well though. This was in a 68' camaro with a small block but we beat the hell out of it and it held up great.

The m-21 would work fine in your 2wd truck unless your hauling a lot of weight as its designed for a car. M-21 is a close ratio and m-20 is the wide ratio. M-22 was a big block corvette trans with straight cut first gear and a close ratio.

Straight cut first three gears, had one in my 454 Chevelle:woot:

T56 is too much money. You have to buy the box, the adapter, then the shifter and take the box apart and install the shift mechanism in the inspection port in the middle of the box. I figured around $2500 with me doing the work.

M22 is a close ratio fourspeed with a straight cut first gear. They handle lots of torque, hard to find and expensive.

M21 is a slightly less beefy close ratio version of the M20

M20 is a wider ratio fourspeed and should work best I think. You can get them rebuilt here in socal with no exchange for $1200.

Personally I chose a Saginaw 441. Its not as strong as a Muncie, but where my motor is at and how I drive my truck, it should last a long while until I do up my 388 and go for a Muncie. I got it off Craiglist, with a Hurst shifter (its for a 68 camaro so its going back on CL) that was recently rebuilt for $400...... its a 3 groove with a 3.50:1 first, which would work well with my gearing from the SM465 in the rear axle.

why does everyone say its hard to find m22s when me and another member have already shown you can buy a brand new m22 in any muncie gearset you want? haha. And its stronger than the original m22s by leaps and bounds.

Yeah but my point is why get beef and 4 gears when you can get beef and 5 gear for the same price?

Doug Nash 4+1....Richmond Gear 5 speed.

Advanced Adapters used to sell a kit to swap a Muncie car 4 speed into a GM 4x4,I was very tempted to put one in my 72 K5 I had back in the 90's..I have read about GM using a close ratio NP435 tranny in some 4WD trucks, and a Clark 5 speed in 60's trucks, but I've yet to see one in person...

We had a NP540GD in a pickup for a while. GM used them in a few 60s grain trucks. They were 5 speeds and 5th was direct. This got rid of that big gap between 3rd and 4th in an SM 465.

Maybe so, IDK, but I had one in my 71 with an LT1 350 and tuned header sidepipes. May have been an option, cannot remember but I had to show the the RPO codes to the inspection guys every year due to the header/sidepipes.
