machined a new pinion washer. pics *UPDATE* SEE POST #24

I would like to, however handle this on my personal e mail and not in the garage on CK5. I dont want to, and wont disrespect Steve Fox and his, and CK5 rules. hope you guys understand.

I will get each of your e mail addys from your profile and e mail you when I have found out what it takes to make them. thats the best I can do, take it or leave it.

I was going to suggest that people contact you via e-mail. :waytogo:

I never meant for you to sell these, or list a price, on the thread as a vendor. I'm coming straight to you as a private party. If this is what it takes to get a price, I will shoot a PM to you right now. I'm not trying to get you in trouble or to shell out money that you can't recover.

after pricing material and finding out I CAN NOT get material in the size needed to make these out of thick wall tubing, It not worth the cost or my time to make these out of solid round stainless steel. soild bar 304 SS is very pricy.

I dont have tha ability to saw cut slugs that are needed to do these and you cant part off stainless on a lathe that big of diameter. also my lathe strugles drilling holes even 1/2 inch in diameter in stainless so I would have to drill smaller, step drill up to about 1/2 maybe 5/8 then bore out to size. thats alot of boring to get to .937 dia.

I searched for a substitute hardened washer and all I found was basically what a factory washer would be. 15/16 ID is not common at all. its a specialty washer.

15/16 ID X 1 3/4 OD X .136 MIn to .177 max thickness is what I found which is about what a stock washer is.

my washer is aprox 2.125 OD X .940 ID and aprox .220 thick. its a one off custom that I would have to charge in the neighborhood of 75 bucks for.

so as much as I hate to say no, I have to decline on doing these washers.

hope you guys understand.

$75? Is that all? Put me down for 4 of them.

Kidding! "Yowza!" was all I could say when I read that price quote. Maybe someday if you need something I have, we can work that out for trades.

Well, I appreciate you looking into it. Maybe $20 at LMC wasn't so bad afterall (puke).

No Hijack here rdn, but McMaster-Carr #98099A048 comes damn close.:wink1:

here are the specs: this washer is for a 1 in bolt, has a 1.032 ID, @ in OD and is .23 to .27 thick. cost $13.33 each. page 3133 of the online catalog

Theres about .05 clearence around the pinion threads. not bad at all. anyone looking for a better then stock washer, this is your best bet, thanks Brent. when they make these by the millions they can cut the cost much better then I can. Mcmaster Carr sells to the public, just need a credit card.

I only stepped-up because my face is heavily in the MC catalog right now. I don't even have a 14B in my rig.
That particular washer is case hardened by the way.

I sent a PM to all who were interested with a link to read poat # 29 with the specs and cost, hope this helps.

For what it's worth, the stock washer at LMC is $12.95. They just tack on $7 S&H. I'm sure shipping would be much less with McMaster (and you'd get a better washer). I wish I would have thought to check McMaster first.

Is black oxide better or stronger than stainless steel? Or vice versa?

Just ordered one. According to the MC site, it will ship out in the morning. I will get pics up once it arrives.

black oxide just the coating the hardened steel washer is coated with, and is not a very durable coating, it will rust fairly soon, especially since it will see water from time to time from either wheelin or rain. not to mention just being exposed to outside damp air. stainless steel like 304 does not rust.

The stainless washer was cheaper than the oxide one. It was like $6 and change.

Which would be the better one?

did it say what type of stainless it was? 18-8 SS is crap. was it the same spec as the hardened washer?
