Maching Aluminum 16.5’s to a 16” ???

It’s dumb question, probably asked 100’s of times before but........

Why not ? 22.5’s can be machined to accept 22” passenger car tires .. thoughts???

Interesting idea. I'd have to guess theres not enough material to remove 1/4 inch.

Its incredibly unfortunate that the new US wheel slots only come in 17 inch for 8 on 6.5 inch.

I am going to add my vote for not enough meat.
The 22.5" wheels are massive because they are for heavy commercial purposes and could lose 1/4" if being used for a pickup truck but the 16.5" is not the same
 
i am also leaning to the thickness side of the problem . would be interesting to use a set of calipers and see the thickness of the 16.5 and a true 16" rim and see how much extra is there or not .

I sort of agree.....except: When I was looking for new rubber the other issue is that most of the good tires are going with 17". Going to a 17x9, 8 on 6.5, opened up choices for all the good tires. I have a nice set of AL 16" but the tire choices are going away.
 
Yeah, in order to get the 90 degree bead seat you would make the wheel too thin. Tried one back a long time ago. However if you can weld and build up the bead seat area and then re cut it essentially making the bead seats closer together its doable. You would have super thick bead area that would need machined down to not look ridiculous. Just not really worth the effort imo.
 
You’d need to remove 1/4” of material all the way around, probably the thickness of the rim.

I didn't realize that 16 inch was losing selection already. That's unfortunate.
 
actually 16.5 and 16 wheels are 16" the difference is the bead, safety bead and 5* taper on 16". 15* taper bead on 16.5

I’m not opposed to having them welded back up and turned down to get the proper bead surface angle. Like @Wes Harden said the rim diameter is not 16.5 the .5 is a designator for the different bead profile
 
As for 16” tires sizes , the sizes I like are still very popular and in production for a few mote years to come anyways lol
 
also the problem is the rims you posted are CAST and lots of times welding cast aluminum can be tricky if its dirty cast over cleaner cast . so welding them might prove to be fun .
 
16 inch tires of the 235/245/265/285 variety aren't going anywhere. In the all season, all terrain, light mud tire. The rest of the stuff is getting a bit harder these days.
 
I don't know guy. Real men buy their tires in standard. Eh?
Unfortunately 16" rims have very little choice in standard sizes metric is where they are.
It took me a while to accept it and now I am preparing for a move to 17"
