LOL, maybe he could scrap it and get a first gen

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Bad dog buy a sheet of aluminum and clamp a piece of pipe on top of it. Then take a soft mallet and slowly hammer the edge around the pipe. Work slow and it'll come out nice. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

That would work. I've also thought about building a primitive brake (hmm, is it break?) out of angle iron to use for building body panels, gas tank, etc...

Now, if I can just figure out where to find the friend with free aluminum. Anyone want to be my friend? LOL /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

check the scrap yards, a place here sells it for $1/pound...and they have about 200 sheets that would work!!! Then for $10 you're well on your way!

Micheal- Ugly is good when you're poor like me!

Les- Too damn many curved pieces of metal, i'm better with straight edges, LOL

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Well take it apart and get more pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks good. I am getting more and more interested in Yanking my factory dash and doing something like that. Look forward to seeing the finished product. If I can get a Jd2 I'm redoing my cage and doing a dash like that for sure.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Make sure you put some little visors over the gauges to keep them from glaring on the windshield at night. I didn't cover mine up very well and i could read my gauges in the windshield at night. It was a real pain on longer trips. I ended up turning the dash lights off most of the time.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

I actully already thought of that. What I was going to do is run a stringer between the two A-Piller legs of the cage about the hight of the stock dash on the driverside. Run a second one accross just above the steering colum and tie it in as a suport. The dash face would go accross the face of the lower bar and lean back about 15-20 degrees to get the gages pointed right at the driver. The upper stringer would then hang over the gages and provide the needed shade. Make the top of the dash out of some aluminum with black vinyl over it to keep it from reflecting off the windsheild. Some Dzus fasteners to hold the top and faces down like a Semi does for quick access to the gages for repair. Some stick on roll bar pad accross the front of the top stringer to finshing off and keep people from planting their face dirrectly into the bar. A couple of cut outs in the top of the passenger side so the top stringer can be used by the passanger as a grab handle.
See I have this all planned out in my head. I just need about $1000 in tools to make it LOL.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

I ran a 1.75” bar across between the front a-pillar bars with the ends bent to turn down a bit and the horizontal part of the bar is offset behind the joint (an over-hang). Looks kind of like an early 70s F100 dash. Then, I welded a piece of 1” angle on the back side with the “point” against the bar. It has one “leg” of the angle horizontal leading toward the cowl. That will support the flat top of the “dash”. The other “leg” is vertical and will form the support for the dash panel. The angle is welded onto the back side of the tube at 135* off the top. That forms a natural lip over the gauges, a lip on top to keep things (like maps, sandwiches, etc.) from sliding off the top, and it provides the mounting surface needed. It also allows a piece of padding to be slipped over the bar with the slice meeting (hidden) at the weld.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Well, the dash is not finished yet, and my camera is dead, so here is a profile sketch of how the support piece is attached on the back of the bar. Hope that helps make sense out of it...

I think this is one of those rare instances where the pic actually looks worse than real life. I guess my flash did some weird ju ju on the dash swirls. I'm still not completely sure on the finish, but if it reflects too much light, I guess I'll pull it back out and powdercoat the damn thing black. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
