My tranny is a th700r4 and the K5 is a 1990.

Aamco has done a ton of work to the transmission and I now have to bring it back. It keeps having the same problem and I am wondering if I can do anything abut this myself.

The shifting will be fine for a day or two and then it will get too high. Right now it will not shift into second gear until 30mph. It used to shift at 15 (right where it should be) and it kept getting higher and higher and now it's back to 30. The other gears are delayed too. It's stuck in second gear up until 50mph. I play with the shifter and try manually shifting too, but no response.

This will be the third time I have had to take it back to the shop for the same problem. I called corporate offices and complained, but they said they wouldn't do anything. I keep burning the clutches too. I am not having stupid fun with this thing either, this is when I drive it like an old lady and it still gives me these issues.

I was told the cable is the issue last time I was at the shop and had them replace it. I would adjust it until I drove in to my garage tonight and noticed oil spots. What is this place doing wrong week by week?I have had enough. I want to take it to another Aamco and have the warranty work done, but I cannot do it with approval of the shop that did the work originally.

If I had the choice I would ask for the cost of the transmission back, they could keep the transmission and get a built turbo 400 for $800.

What can I do here? I just finished working some other problems out myself, but this transmission issue never ends. I keep taking it back for the same thing over and over... they never get it right. I'm really angry. What should I do? Or what is the issue that is causing this?

TV cable needs to be set correctly. If it has a new cable then there is something wrong with the mechanism that locks the cable in place after it's been set.

I also have a '90 Blazer, and the tranny did the opposite of what yours does. It was shifting really early, one shift after another and the shifts were very soft. Someone linked a great write up on the TCI website, so for giggles I figured i'd "set" (not adjust) my TV cable just to see. I followed the procedure to the letter and saw quite a difference in the position of the cable before and after. It now shifts reasonably firm, and at the correct time/speed etc now.

aamco is awful and never followed through with what they said.
i was young and didnt know any better, but if i were you i would ask for the entire cost back.
do it yourself or install a th400 for WAY less.
it took me three 700r4s to be able to build a 400 and put it in.

x2 with tRustyK5. When I first got my truck, I had no idea what the TV cable was, and had it off for some reason, and just threw it back on. Then my truck did exactly what yours is doing now. I also remember being linked to some sort of write up on how to fix it, I'll have to look and see if I can find it.

Yes please look that up. If I can just adjust the cable and call it a day I would be delighted.

I am 24 BTW so I guess I am still "young".

Gotta ask the questions. Doesn't matter if you're young or old. get it set up and see how it does after that.

you run the risk of burning it up very quicky if you keep driving it like that though. just so you know.

Yes I am fully aware of burning it up. I already burned the clutches three times after they told me to drive it over. It's still under warranty, but this is just annoying. This is supposed to be my winter truck and I have to drive my Mercury Marauder in the snow. I bought winter tires 2 years ago because it was cheaper than replacing the transmission.

This is really annoying.

AAMCO SUCKS !
I was ripped off by them many years ago and took my truck to another place. I tried to take my case to their main office and they told me they couldnt do anything. I then went to the BBB and they only did what they were able to do.
You can either keep going back to them untill they get it right since its under warrenty , or cut your losses and go to another shop. Dont try to fix it yourself or they could void your warrenty , then you still would have to pay again.

Yep not a fan of AAMCO either, but they did offer to take my cheesy NP 205 transfer case off my hands and put in a 203 which would be much better for off-roading. They also didn't hook up my TV cable properly and I had to do it right myself, and left bellhousing bolts loose.

I dropped off truck and gave them one month to get it done and they said it would take 7 to 10 days then when I called a week ahead of time they weren't sure they could get it done in time and didn't.

Thanks for the info, but I don't see how to trouleshoot. Since it's shifting too late I don't know if I need to add tension or release it.

the tv cable is SET, NOT ADJUSTED...

it's not a matter of troubleshooting...

engine off. depress the D-button on the TV cable and pull the sheath all the way towards the firewall. release button. operate throttle to wide open... you should hear the cable click a couple clicks.. release throttle.. done, eezy peezy...

My trans guy does it like this. Push the D button, push cable to firewall, then press the gas pedeal to the floor. Says if you just got to WOT at the carb/TB to set it, it could still be off because your pedal might not give full throttle available. From my unerstanding you want it be set at the full throttle position that you get with pedal floored.

The technicians at that perticular AAMCO seem to be at fault as well as the center manager on that one. Does your state have a bureau of automotive repair? They would be in the best position to stir up some **** and get you helped out. No shop anywhere wants to deal with the B.A.R. and usually get to rectifying the situation rather rapidly. Sorry to sound offended , I am a diagnostic technician for AAMCO, and we do top notch work. Other independent shops in town could do just as poor work as that location. It sounds to be just as much of a not very white of you AAMCO as poor workmanship.

I totally agree with the recommendations to set the TV cable, but there is no reason why the setting should be changing. If anything, the adjustment would get "looser" over time (causing earlier, weaker shifts) and not "tighter". Have you checked the fluid level?

If the shifts are getting later, I would suspect that the throttle valve is sticking. If you're lucky, that's just a bad cable. The throttle valve likes to stick when there is junk in the fluid. If there is junk, it's coming from somewhere and that means something is wearing. It's also possible that the governor gear is wearing out, but usually that jacks all the shift points up at once.
