Couple months back I bought my first K5, a 74, as a project. I got it for pretty short money. Truck was a little rough, interior was trashed, it was incredibly dirty but it had a 454 and I liked it. Here's what it looked like when I bought it (you can't seen the quarter-inch thick coating of 10 years worth of a leaking NP203 caked underneath):

Since then, I've basically rebuilt the entire interior (stock-style covers, carpet, etc.) and all the rubber seals. This is going to be a street truck for me, so I wanted it to be reasonably comfy.

I swapped out the 203 (that had been "sealed" with about three tubes of Permatex) with a 205. Put 35 MT/Rs on new wheels. Added a stock rollbar. Put in a stereo and speakers. Got rid of a bunch of the PO's crap, including about two miles of excess wiring. And cleaned off most of the crap under the tub.

Took it out for its first real drive today and had a blast. It's top-off weather here and truck behaved nicely. The steering feels a little vague and the truck does wander a bit. Actually a lot. My old rockcrawler on supersoft springs, no swaybars and 40-inch tires was less vague. Thoughts on that? I'll start with the basics: new swaybar bushings, possible TREs. Ball joints feel OK (no play). There is a bit of play in the steering rag joint.

Anyway, justed wanted to share a couple pics. Oh, and I've got a Scout II bikini top coming:

Interior looks awesome now!

Nice clean rig overall.

Seems them palm type trees have a way of sucking the rust out of the air!

looks like a nice rig to me dig the two tone color scheme in that color, cant believe theres not much cancer and props on the 454, aint nothin like a big block

badass man...i would love to have something like that down here in FL and take it to the beaches!!!! i think it would look badass in green and white too. keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the kind words. It's a neat truck. One cancer spot on the lower DS door. I'll likely pick up some replacement doors and front quarters from another truck, then have it repainted.

Man, the baby**** yellow did really grow on me :wink1:

Any thoughts on the vague steering?

Truck looks great man. great to see a purdy full-top every now and then :D

Steering - check the box at the frame. Have a buddy steer side to side while you look. My box had ripped off of the frame at some point before I got the truck, and the frame had been rewelded and braced, but the box was shot. Made my steering K-RAZY. After that, then check TRE's, drag link, ball joints and bearings.

Alright, first off beautiful rig. I really want to compliment you on how you took your time getting everything right before going crazy. It is pretty apparant that you took your time getting things right so this thing is safe before just getting it and throwing on a huge lift with huge tires just for look so Kudos to you on a great rig done right.

Believe it or not my truck used to be close to that color, until the previous owner put gray primer all over it and spray painted the dash black. I was kind of mad when he said "Yeah, I didn't like the color" I love that color and am jeleous that my truck could have looked like yours :( . But I sucked it up and rolled my flat black and yellow scheme on there.

Wow :eek1: . That interior looks just about as good as mine! Nice job! What all did you have to replace and where did you get it? All your stuff looks "period correct" for a '74. I have yet to find a supplier that sells "true" stock '73-'76 interior parts...

It's not quite top-off weather here yet, but I'll be running around here topless before too long...:D
