Making the trails

First of all you really need to verify what the issue is. I would hate to see you buy all the parts and have them installed only to find out something else was wrong.

It sounds like the best bet would be to buy a complete used axle out of the junkyard and bolt it in. A Lock-right would have better traction off-road and would require an open differential. However, civilian models had the option of the Gov-lock rear axle so you would need to find out which one it is.

Did M1009's have Gov-Locks? I thought they were all open?

So 340 for a lock right and 100 for open carrier both for 3.08 gears and 8.5 inch diff and the used axles I'm finding are either the same axle I have or open duffs for 750 a pop. What other parts will I need besides those two.

And yes the m1009's came with a gov lock and I have a good reason to believe that it's the locker cause I had an issue of it not unlocking until I heard another pop. FYI I was running over trees in low and the one I was getting at had the front tires off the ground before the noise then the tree snapped. I was able to finish the trail though

Yep gov loc and 3.08 gears Martin. You can buy either a civi one or gov one. A stock ten bolt ain't worth 700 bucks. There's guys on this site junking them for scrap. I've heard that more than once. You shouldn't have to pay more than a couple hundred for one. Have you tried pick and pulls? Much cheaper there. If you do get the parts and rebuild what you got I would get the carrier and a bearing kit. You don't have to do the bearings if they are tight but you will know once you open it and check it all out. Either way you will probably need to set the backlash again and if using the same gears it may just go together using the same shims if you're lucky. The pinion depth should still be fine so you won't have to mess with that at least.

Yea I'll see when I get back state side and if it comes down to it I'll bring it to a bud of mine to get it done correctly

It's not that hard to do. Just need a couple tools to get it done. Bearing puller and a dial indicator to get the backlash. Like I said you may get lucky and be able to use the same shims and have it be fine. But going from a govloc to open case it may have a slight difference in side to side and need a small adjustment.

Well ill give it hell and will probably blow this thing up during the process and thanks for all the help y'all have given me a week ago I had no clue what what was

For sure. I guess I just thought they were open because I knew they didn't get the Detroit. I know of one sitting in an iron pile that I could have for free. It was replaced with a set of 3.42 geared axles from another Blazer.

I thought of replacing the gears in mine but 4-low seems to do the job great. I only broke tank cause I was pushing down a tree strong enough to hold the front of my 1009 off the ground. That and a set of swore ltb's pull HARD

Yeah that'll do it for sure. Sounds like you we're tweeking it pretty good. May have broken some teeth off the ring or pinion gear. It will somewhat do what you are saying too. Spin ok til it hits the bad spot then locks up and as it winds up torque pushes it past the bad spot to move again. Let us know what you see when you get home and can pull the cover and we ll go from there.
