I was clearing some woods with my m1009 when started to make a popping noise. Once I made it further down into a clearing i found it was also it seemed to be catching then popping free again. I assume it's the gov lock in the rear and that's where the noise is coming from. I can't seem to find an exact match to that Easton locker online. If anyone has the p/n or had a similar problem let me know please

I had popping noises when the u-joints in the front axle shafts were bad...

Yea but did it feel like it was locking up then popping loose. Also it it's only when going slow and turning . Then I heard what sounded like the rear tire was dragging

Yes.

Were you using it in 4 wheel drive? If no and your hubs were unlocked then it wouldn't be the u-joints.
If yes, then you could go back out and try to duplicate it in 2 wheel drive. That would eliminate the front as the issue if it's still doing the same thing.

It continues to have all the problems in 2 wheel drive and it's not the transmission or transfer case. I'm 90% sure it's the gov lock I just can't find a replacement

If it really has a bad govloc, I'd probably just get an open carrier and put a lockrite in it.

When my rear U joint went bad, it sounded horrible, sounded like I grenaded the rear end. Dont under estimate the simple stuff first. Get under there and give the drive shaft a twist and tug, youll know immediately, take ya 30 seconds.

Ok I'm still in Africa and will b until mid December and once I'm home ill check the unjoint, but if not I need to know more about the lock rite and open carrier. Will it still lock when needed and how hard is this job

The lock rite is a automatic locker but will allow it to disengage and engage while turning. It's easy easy to install. I don't recommend one for the front unless it's basically an offroad rig. The lock rite in the front can be a little ruff for a daily driver. opinion varies for the front.

From their site:
"The LOCK-RIGHT's operation is fully automatic. Designed to send the engine power to the wheels with the most traction, the LOCK-RIGHT will help get you where you want to go. While traveling straight the LOCK-RIGHT will lock the axles together similar to a spool. However, when the wheels need to differentiate in a turn, the LOCK-RIGHT will allow the outside wheel to rotate faster to complete the turn. The internal gears on the LOCK-RIGHT will overrun each other to allow this differentiation."

I had a lockrite in a 10 bolt front in my blazer and daily drove it. As long as you aren't in 4 wheel drive it doesn't work. I also have a lockrite in the Dana 60 that is currently under the front of my truck. You don't know that it's there unless you're in 4 wheel drive, even with drive flanges.

You are either going to get A new carrier and swap them out or find the parts To rebuild the gov loc you have. You could probably swap in a new axle for cheaper if you can find one with the correct gears which were 3.08s. So it wont be too hard to find one as a lot of stock civi blazers werre geared rhe same. The lock rite takes The place of the spider gears so you don't have to set up the gears again if you get a new Axle To Swap in. If you get a new carrier and internals to put in a lockrite or similar locker you will need to re setup the gears as the carrier May change the way the gears Mesh. Sometimes using the same shims you Can get close enough and run it if it works but may need some changes to get it to be correct and not burn up the gears.

I'm so confused. I honestly have never opened up a rear diff all I know is from what I've seen in pics. So as of right now I have a factory gov lock that locks when needed and no spider gears. If I put a lock right and open carrier it'll just be a newer better set up of what I already have? Or put a spider gear set up but I won't have the rear in locked any more.

As far as I know the axle and gears are good I just have signs of the locker breaking. I drove it home and parked it until I got further info on what I'm getting into

The gov loc was a crappy design and the ten bolt one has too many small parts that are prone to fail because of the weak design. You can get a stock open carrier to replace what you have and reuse the geas you have now but you will have to reset the gears because of the new carrier. That's why I suggested swapping in a new stock oPen carrier axle. Then you can put in a new locker if you want and get rid of the gov loc that is prone to breakage. You could get a good used axle for under a couple hundred bucks and install it in the place of toe current broken axle. It will save you money and you Don't have to Reset the gears.

Ok so a normal civilian blazer would have an open carrier which means only the tire with less resistance would spin. Then put a locker in so both will pull

Ok so a lock right locker will be open until I put power to it which is what what I need but I need an open carrier in order to install the lock right

Correct, where at in Louisiana is your blazer?
What are you doing in Africa? I have alot of friends that should be somewhere in Africa right noww and that have been.

New Iberia Louisiana and I'm on a barge called the thialf. I work on and pilot remote controlled submarines for the oil field

That is correct sir. Except it won't truly be open but allow the inner wheel to rotate slower like a open diff as long as you stay off the gas. If you get on the gas around a turn too hard it will lock and sqeel the tires and possible turn you sideways on loose gravel. It will take getting used to. The gov lox you have now stops working after I believe 15 mph but works on wheelspin locking yhe axle together after one wheel spins too fast. That action after a while is what eventually can break the govloc. Most stock duffs are open with the g80 on the build sheet being a option for civi trucks. You would just have to pull the cover to make sure the one you get is a open carrier before you buy it and also to make sure of the correct gear ratio and to look inside to see if anything is wrong with it. Clean oil with no Metal shavings in the bottom. Most axles have a magnet to catch metal particles in the bottom of the diff.
