Hey 54,

I am staying with the SM465 for a while. I have no personal experience with that tranny other than a friend who had a 78 GMC longbed, 383/465/205, 8+3, 60/14, 16x38.5x15 TSL's and he never got stuck no matter how hard he tried to bury it. The SM465 is one tough cookie!

Once I recover a while from this build, I will invest in an Art Carr 700R4 and swap it out. I want the OD too! It'll mean that I have to re-gear to 5.13's, but it's worth every penny!

For now though, I am extremely satisfied with the 465/205 (soon to be) and I'll run her for quite some time.

Manny

OMG Manny don't swap out your SM465 for an auto!!!

Manny swapping in an auto is a downgrade! Even with a built 700R4 it will never be stronger than the tride and true SM465. Plus nothing beats the cost of one. Just saw an ad for a 465/205 combo for $150 And a built 700r4 cost well over $1K and requires much more maintainance than the SM465.

I know overdrive is sweet but have you thought about the NV4500 or even better the NV5600?

I would have to agree with the rest on this one Manny. I have the 700R4 in mine currently and just had it rebuilt. I would have much rather swapped over to a stick except for some time restraints. Rene swapped a NV4500 into his rig and from what I have read that would be the way to go if you want a 5 speed. Or you could also go with the 4L80E. Much better than a 700.

Oh and lookin good on the truck. I guess you are feeling better know?

If you really want an auto, you could look at the 4L80E as a much more bulletproof option than the 700R4.

BS!

I just did 10 minutes of research on nv4500 and 5600 and can you say EXPENSIVE. $1000 for an adaptor, $3000 for the tranny, and the 5600 weighs like 450 lbs.

F that. 465 or 700R for me.

Rock on with your plans Manny!

BTW 2004R can be bulit as strong as 700R and the 4l80E is just and electronic version of a 700....now if you are just doing a basic rebuild of a 700 they do not withstand anything.......

my 700 is a raptor and does just fine till about 500 ft lbs of torque........

It is all in how the tranny is built......

I think you may be mistaken...

The 700r4 turned into the 4L60, then the 4L60E. While the 4L80E is comparable more to an electronic overdrive version of the TH400. The 4L80E is one of the stronger autos that GM has produced (with acception for the Allison)

Manny,

I don't post much, but I thought I'd drop ya a line. The truck is lookin' good. Keep up the good work, and take your time. A good healthy recovery is the most important thing. I'm looking forward to seeing that thing nice and MUDDY!!!

Hey, Manny, it's sounds like you're doing well. I know I'm impressed with everything you've got done this week. I feel like sleeping all day sometimes, and I didn't even just have major surgery. :wink1: Thanks for sharing I'm learning a lot.

So, now that we all have our facts straight you probably have enough info to research trannys if you'd like. For Chevy autos w/overdrive the 4L80E is very similar to a TH400 w/overdrive which is considered bulletproof by most. I don't know much about manuals other than the NV4500 is popular for cummins swaps, so it must handle a lot of torque. You sure are lucky, you even mention you might have a question and guys are jumping to spew info, while other threads have to wait a couple days sometimes. You go Manny, you deserve it!

If you want overdrive with a SM465 try this http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=27714

since you only need it in 2wd anyway.

You also can add extra overdrive gears to a transmission by installing a "gear splitter" (also known as an overdrive/underdrive unit or auxiliary transmission). It enhances acceleration and towing abilities, too. Gear splitters essentially give you two gears for every gear in your transmission. So they make your lowest gear (first) even lower, and they make your highest gear even higher. A gear splitter bolts on behind your transmission. They're available from such companies as Gear Vendors (www.gearvendors.com) and U.S. Gear (www.usgear.com).

keep in mine while all the goodies are great, they also add lenth and that is want u dont want. the more length you have the shorter your rear drive will be and the more pinion angle you will have. so with all that being said....before you weld on those new spring perches make sure you got the xmsn and t/c that you are going to use so you can turn that pinion the correct amount the first time.

Hey Seafarer,

The 208 crossmember and 205 crossmember are two totally different animals. The 205 has a passenger side drop while the 208 does not.

Manny

the 208 and 205 are both passenger side drop t-cases. what are you talking about?

must be just the newer 32 spline 205's, that have the different crossmember. i know the older 205's have a straight crossmember.

Gear Vendors

HiJack ON:

I just called Gear Vendors about their unit for the sm465 and they were great to talk to, very knowledgeable.

It would bolt to the back of the transfer case, typically either 203/205, even if you have a doubler.

It is roughly 13" long and 40 lbs.

It is rated for 1200 HP and 30,000 lbs towing. :eek1:

It is an option that is ALOT lighter than the NV5600 and just as strong I am sure.

Here is the Application list Price schedule and Gearing spread:

HiJack OFF

I just posted that for some additional information and as a response to what DAFEY posted. Following up, I guess you can say. An alternate to your plan.

As it has been said, he has a long bed. so the angle should be fine especially with all of options with driveshafts. I CAN imagine the driveshaft angle.

I hope the info will help someone.

When I bite into a York Peppermint Patty, I get the sensation of cold, crisp Texas air whipping against my face, blowing through my hair as my truck races down I-35 with a GM NV4500 5 speed on the floor, running over every Jeep in sight in the 1st Annual Texas Highway Jeep Bash-a-thon!

Get the sensation. York Peppermint Patty!

Uh Oh Manny must be high on his pain meds! ;) :D

I would join you for that day. Just the joy of bashing Jeeps sounds like fun. Keep up the good work Manny.
