I'm swapping tailgates, but i ran into a problem transferring the handle for the rear window over to the "new" gate. One of the bolts holding it on is nice and easy to get to, and the other is a nightmare. I can get it off, but i have no clue how i will be able to get it back on since I can't even get a socket in there. Is there any trick to this? Or have I opened a can of worms by taking it off? I can post pics to clarify if needed.

I don't know if there is a better way, it was a pain for me but it worked out, a ratchet wrench helped a lot though:bow:

I just replaced the rear window crank handle on my 74. I still have the tail gait opened up and I will see if I can get some clear pictures for you to show how you can get to the one nut. The regulator gears have cut outs in them that, when properly aligned, give a narrow access to the nut. I used some tape to hold the crank handle assembly on the tailgate so I could work from the top without worrying about holding onto the handle.

If I remember correctly, the passenger side nut was the most difficult to access. Again, let me see if I can get some pictures. If not tonight, hopefully tomorrow night.

I forgot about that, it does make a big difference where you have the arms to get the access to the bolt/nut

Yeah, my arms are far too short to be able to hold onto the handle and reach in to tighten the nuts! LOL Compound that with having the window partially out as well, you have to have some really long arms to reach in there and hold onto the crank handle.

Anyway, I think I may have some time this afternoon to have a look at my truck and see if I can get some good pictures.

*EDIT*

Ok, so I was able to snap some pictures. Hopefully they show what you need. I do know, looking at it now and remembering back a few months, that I was using a 1/4" drive socket with the 3" extension, then adapting to 3/8" drive because I did not have any more 1/4" drive extensions. The 1/4" drive made it so there was enough room for the socket to get a good alignment on the nut. I also used some paper between the nut and the socket to add just a bit of resistance to keep the nut from falling out. The window was in the all the way up position, but may be past where it usually stops when the gate is closed. You do need to have something there to support the window. My shop/bar stool worked great for this purpose.

Anyway, here are the pictures:

Thanks for the help guys, i think I can get it now. btw swart, i really like the paint scheme on your k5

No problem on the pictures. I am glad to help. I had everything apart already so it really took less than 5 minutes to do.

Truth be told, the paint sucks on my Blazer. It will be going back to the catalina blue that the general put on it originally before I am done with it. I may keep the white two tone though. Not too crazy about the black top with that color scheme though.

i'm thinking about putting black instead of white on the body and having the black top, or just painting the body completely red. decisions, decisions...
