Quick question cause I dont have an owners manual and I heard different answers depending on who I ask....

I have a 96 S-10 with a 2.2 and a 5 speed 2 wheel drive and am wondering what type of fluid is recomended for the transmission ive heard 90 weight, syncromesh fluid, atf, 10w-30 and would just like to know which is the right one. Thanks

I can look it up in my Chiltons manual for you. I'm going to guess though that it probably requires the syncromesh fluid.

EDIT: I just took a look and the Chiltons doesn't spec what type of fluid just the capacity.

Synchromesh is what we would put in when I worked at the dealership, its what GM recommends :dunno:

hell, i put the penzoil gm synchromesh in my civic and it cured my 5th gear pop out and shifted smoother was still notchy feeling, but I think that was just how it was...don't tell the honda kids or they'd have my head for not using honda fluids or redline...

Eh, gotta love the purists. I'm having trouble with my Tracker's 5 speed. Mook who owned it before me put 75W90 GL5 gear oil in it and the transfer case I think. GL5 has stuff in it that ISN'T "yellow metal" (bronze/brass) friendly and chews up the bronze/brass synchronizers in transmissions and transfer cases with them. So it is hard to shift some times and the transfer case won't go into 4lo, only 4hi, 2hi, and neutral.

Meanwhile...GM says a 2002 Tracker gets Synchromesh in both while Suzuki says a 2002 Vitara gets 75w90 GL4 in both.

I put Synchromesh in it last year but am contemplating some of Redline's 75w oil that is specifically mentioned as being good in Toyota transmissions (what this is) and others have said cured theirs of some quirks.
I just want to make it a bit easier to shift and not so "sticky" sometimes. Would be great if I got 4lo back without having to disassemble the t-case.
