Meet "Murphy" the '84 K5

that half cab idea sounds like what I'm talking about trying to make. does anyone make a kit already so I'm not reinventing the wheel?

I think cucv2 has/had some for sale and knows the guy with the die to make them iirc.

thanks Deuling... the solutions to this problem started at 'buy a trailer' went all the way around the crazy loop, and ended up back at 'buy a trailer'.

So I will probably just go that route!

Good boy :D id hate to see you get rig of that perdy sheet metal, unless it ended up in my driveway :haha:

haha, that's great K5 Jess, that means it looks good!

the thought was "how can I better haul a dead elk around?"...I think the trailer is the most practical solution.

Here are the radiator install pics for those asking.

Pic 1 you can see where I had to trim the bracket to fit around the cap
Pic 2 you can see where I added some rubber to keep it from moving around at all. yes, I know my hood release cable needs some help
Pic 3 is the other mount, just for reference

The champion fit easily compared to the griffin I ordered originally.

Hope that helps!

Im considering the same option for my rig. Im thinking of a small winch off the back of a roll cage to help lift the animal. But basically on hunting trips the rear seat would have to stay home

I don't hunt elk, but could you put one in/on those trailer hitch luggage carriers. Some are quite large. It would keep it out of your truck and you wouldn't have to tow a trailer.

Cant display the dead animal like that anymore. If a warden caught you, youd be up shiiet creek!

What about making a box the right size on a trailer hitch mount? I've seen some hitch mount Thule boxes, but they look too small and they probably are not durable enough.

Might work if the box is big enough.
But for an Elk, youll need the bed of the truck. Especially if your alone! :doah:

Oops! Unless you quarter it in the field. :doah:

Thanks for the ideas Richcz28! I actually tried the little cargo carrier idea on my deer hunt (you can see it holding my jack in the rainbow picture, since Offroad LTD's bumper broke). I still believe it'd work fine for deer, but elk are just too darn big. Not just size wise either, I bought the biggest carrier at tractor supply and its rated to 500lbs, which is really JUST enough for a good cow elk. I brought a lot of PChord and a tarp to avoid displaying the game while it travelled.

Anyways, like K5Jess suggests, elk just needs more room unless you quarter. I try to avoid quartering, you get a lot more meat in the freezer that way (not to mention a good work out hauling the thing!).

I'm thinking CUCV trailer, put a hitch on it, buy a game hoist that fits in the hitch. That would make elk very feasible for 2 guys, I don't have to buy another vehicle or revamp beautiful Murphy.

I have never seen an elk before, so I really have no idea how big they are. I actually see deer all the time. Even though I am right next to the city they come for the apple trees across the street from my house. We just don't have elk.

The military trailers look cool and I would imagine are good off road, but I have heard they weigh a ton. You may be able to get something else that won't be as much of a burden on your truck to tow.

There is an Elk farm down here by me :doah: I know, odd, but anyways they get monstorous, like 1500lbs and up monstorous. Speaking of that I almost bought one, 300$ for a little guy, but the city said I couldnt keep it in the city limits. ghey

Yeah Rich, and I think K5 Jess is onto something with a winch mounted towards the front of a normal trailer too. I will have to ponder more.

Elk farm = delicious.

Hey fellas,

About to order some mounts to put the jack on the front bumper. I think it'll look pretty mean up there, it will definitely be fun to wash bugs off of :thumb:

Two questions:

They come in sizes of 1-2" or 2-3". My front tube is 2" diameter, so what size should I get?

What stops someone from stealing my jack? looks like these don't require tools to remove the jack. cable lock I suppose?

Here's a link for example: http://www.quadratec.com/products/92200_901X_PG.htm

Thanks!

Also, I'm going to convert what used to be a jack carrier on the rear bumper into a spot for a CB radio antenna. Hopefully its up to that load and the welds can handle it

So here is where the jack is now. I don't think it looks too shabby. Only other thought I had was angling it back just a bit towards the hood, but I'm not sure that gets me anything. Need to figure a way to lock it down. Once I get the extra lights mounted I think the front bumper will look really complete.

Probably hurts my awesome aerodynamics though :haha:

What do you guys think?

Next on the list: install the new seatbelts dyeager sent me, get the extra lights on, get the bench seat in, add CB radio.
