would it be possible to use the extra 4 digets of a zipcode ?
if people wanted to . . . as the extra 4 narrow the area down to a very specific section of a zip code.

That is definitely 1 way to do it! Great idea if people want to narrow down their location. If you don't, and they are in the same zip, I'll just use nearby points such as highways, or main roads to separate them out.
