I'm too paranoid to put an actual zip code in, would use one from LA more than likely.
Is it really a big deal? My zip code is like 16 miles wide, so it's not like a street address or something. Seems like the higher density zip codes have enough people that it's still hard to figure out exactly where people are at. I guess if there's a mob hit out or something...

I've added you all to the map.

@K85 Octane I missed this one. I would say just use something within the vicinity. For example, if I were headed to L.A., I don't need to know you live in Burbank, L.A. is general and close enough that a meetup could be possible.

Would be nice to have a CK5 member up there that I could connect with to plan my trip to "Amity"...patrolling for sharks with the Brody Blazer....

I do live on a houseboat...

Martha's Vineyard is an easy ferry ride. If you are serious about planning a trip out there, you may prefer to schedule on the open ferry that is more like a barge. They have a fancy one were your car/truck goes underneath, but I like sitting in the drivers seat and pretending I'm driving over the ocean. I got the front spot once, and all I could see over my hood was water.

You actually may see quite a few antique jeeps and even square bodies on the islands. The max speed limit is like 40 mph and beaches have 4x4 access. Despite the salt, they are a haven for unique older 4x4s.

Zip Code me if you'd like

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't know that the zip code makes much difference for criminal activity .
Google your name, no middle initial , and see what shows.
And there are 'services ' to provide more info than what is available for free.
Scary . ...

Re: what 85 said, he does live in Commufornia near of all places, L.A. and I've got an idea that he doesn't mean "Lower Alabama". Mr. xtc about the zip code not meaning that much, tell the people in Detroit and Chicago that.

I don't know how concerned people are, but if this thread was moved to a members only section, perhaps that would alleviate some qualms.

Mr.28,
I sincerely hope that my note didn't influence your suggestion about putting this thread (?) in a less accessible area. My comment was intended to be a tongue in cheek joking statement about the people that have to put up with laws that to some people, such as myself, seem extreme and stupid, or is that extremely stupid?

As an individual whose family is about knee deep in state government and law enforcement and on the opposite coast (thank the Good Lord), my 2 girls started learning how to take care of themselves at 5 and 6 years old if you understand my meaning. My wife who was a law enforcement dispatcher will tell you that there's only so many officers, and they can't be always be sitting in your front yard. They and myself both know to identify ourselves should they have to come to my house. Please notice that I freely gave my zip code and if I weren't afraid that I might start something, I'd give my full address, but now you have to be concerned about someone with a computer attacking you and yours indirectly rather than looking you eye to eye.

I may be wrong, but isn't Chicago or Detroit or both where they have some strict laws and some of the worst crime rates in the U.S. and I guess I should include D.C. in that too.

I may be wrong, or maybe there's extenuating circumstances, but when I get apprehensive about putting something as vague as a zip code out, it's time to do something about it. Vote and elect different politicians for one thing, move if nothing else. Maybe the vultures will go where the pickin's the easiest. I can't believe that in a state as large as California that the extremists are the majority.

Well, somebody come help me down off of this stump. I don't want to twist an ankle or break the other hip ( dam that hurts !!).

Y'all have a good and safe evening, I've got to go take my blood pressure meds. Paul, Columbia, S.C. 29209

P.S. Mr. 28,
This wasn't mean't to be directed to you, but it was mean't for those that are too skittish, so to speak, to stand up and deal with it.

No problemo. I was just giving a suggestion to fix an issue that I guess maybe doesn't exist. I think the zip code thread is a really cool idea, and I would definitely find it helpful when I travel.

I agree. This summer I found myself in Lubbock, Texas, saying "I know we have a club member here, I just don't remember who." And I did the same thing with Canon City last year. Missed opportunities abound...

Wouldn't you just about have to plan the meeting in advance and exchange phone numbers or set something up? I guess, if you have one of the new phones the size of a small chalkboard like my wife, that you could connect that way via Facebook or one of the other groups like that couldn't you?

Seriously, it could really come in handy to be able to contact others on this site, especially if you have a problem. If nothing else, someone local or that's real familiar with the area could make suggestions on where you could get a part or a service. In case y'all haven't figured it out, I don't have one of those phones, I just recently got a new flip phone (my 4 th. ?) and still can't work half of it. Is there any way that someone that's real tech savvy, such as myself, to contact other members without prior planning?

My meds have taken effect, can't you tell? Again, I'm sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes too hard, Paul

I have arranged meetups both with and without a smart telephone. For 3 years now we have taken a trip out west each summer and met up with CK5 guys along the way. It hasn't always been organized, and this past summer the plans pretty much disintegrated while we were en route. But we still met some cool people and had some good times. And, of course, took lots of pictures.

Here are some links if you want to see how we organized it.

It basically started out with a "Who wants to meet up?" posting in the Lounge and then one by one people started sending me private messages about the details of the meetups. I've met people at restaurants, gas stations, and borrowed a number of guest bedrooms & couches. This has also yielded a large number of route suggestions from people who know an area much better than I did. For example, Eric told me to stop at a random rest stop in Idaho, one that I never would have thought to stop at. Turns out this one sits next to a whole bunch of really neat lava flows, things that I could never see in Wisconsin. That simple suggestion, costing me zero extra miles, turned out to be a really neat stop.

This last weekend I arranged to meetup with @GWeakland620 in Topeka, but when I got there he had a church commitment that he had forgotten about. So we met up at church instead, and had a nice (if short) chat there. I recently got a phone capable of accessing CK5 on the road, but prior to that I brought a laptop and used free internet at rest stops or fast food joints. So I could still get messages out, it just wasn't as easy as it is now. Although most on-the-road updates happen via calling or texting people directly.

I haven't personally needed to call for help, but there are folks who have called out and gotten roadside assistance from club members. It just depends on where you break down.

And then, as this is a truck club, folks often get together to do truck club things. There are CK5 wheeling groups in a number of places, wherever there are multiple folks with similar interests. Last summer in our area we did a 5-day overland camping trip (link). I didn't do the primary planning for that one, but it was great fun and we plan to do it again next summer.

So meetups are definitely doable, you just need to get out and do it!

All of that sounds pretty good. Maybe I'll try to do something when it works out. I used to travel 3 states and parts of 2 others for a living so I don't travel much anymore. I really did enjoy traveling back then, but you know, too much of a good thing. If there's anything going on in the S.E. I might try to go.

I know that there's a mud bog near my hunt club in the lower part of the state at a little town named Ulmer (S.C.). I've been once and enjoyed it. The trucks were mostly mud bog warriors. What they lacked on the outside they more than made up for with the engine and drive train.

Y'all have a good one, Paul
