Mid life crisis

1989 GMC Jimmy
I keep forgetting to ask for recommendations on shocks. This has dual front shocks. I have ORD springs that I will be putting on. This truck will spend tons of time on bumpy Minnesota county roads.

I got Bilstiens from ORD, which they have valved to their specs, with my ORD front springs on my '90 and I like them. I also have off the shelf, old Bilstiens on my '70 with ORD springs. It rides great too. Both trucks need the rear springs fine tuned.

I will call them. I think I will need different front springs now that I lost 300 pounds up there

Curious, what are you doing for the fuel system for the L86? Do the Gen V motors with direct injection require anything special? Pretty sure they are paired with a PWM fuel pump in OEM applications, but have read some have success with a standard pump like the EP381.

I had a custom 38 gallon stainless steel tank made by Rick's hotrods he supplied a fuel pump that works. Spear tech supplied the fuel relay with the rest of the harness.

The harness I got from Spear tech is really clean and fits as a custom harness should. There is no plug for DOD\AFM, or the purge/ vapor switch.

Had to order the ORD crossmember no way was the engine going in with the factory one.

Ran into an issue with the vacuum pump. I ended up removing the pulley to keep moving. I read about blocking the oil holes with plugs and using the vapor switch for vacuum. I am going to look at this further.

Option b would be to use an electric booster pump.

Option c is switch to hydro boost but I am unsure if the power steering pump will be able to handle it.20200117_075416.jpg 20200117_162147.jpg 20200117_172113.jpg

Pulled the body ready to start the build up.

New springs from ORD 1/2" forward for the front axle. 4.5 inch lift.

Fuel pump broke in shipping 20200118_170643.jpg

Bummer on the pump... I hate when that crap happens.

Frame is un rusted. POR 15 is an amazing product just sucks to get off your hands.

Maybe I should do a 45 inch lift. Body looks good at that height.20200120_171648.jpg

Whoops! One of us should have remembered to tell you about strapping the arched springs to a 4x4 to flatten it out a little. Or one of the other tricks.
But you got them in!! Nice!

If you have done this you will know what a relief it is to bolt the engine in....

Tank is in just waiting for the replacement pump.

I had a spacer made 1.350" this puts the transfer case 3/8 of an inch back according to the math. The engine mount to transmission mount is 1/4" shorter than it was so I think it washes out. I slotted the bolts a bit more on the transmission mount.

The Holley pan and ORD cross member fits nice. Thanks for the input Eddie.15799039399765164451057857452770.jpg 15799039608863063617668337650892.jpg 15799040268631895595628964815598.jpg

That drivetrain looks great in your frame! I may have missed it, but are you using adjustable motor mount plates/adapters? Did you have to shift the engine fore or aft to line up with the tranny x-member? Will the firewall clear the back of the engine?

Awesome progress!!!

I am using transdapt plates with ORD engine mounts.

I would love to shift the whole works forward about 2 inches but for now I believe it is in the stock location.

Trans crossmember is in the stock holes on the frame.

Got the shocks and steering stabilizer on.

Headers and exhaust are tacked together.

I am thinking about firing it before we put the body on. Still waiting for the fuel

Engine runs and sounds awesome I wish I could post a video. The exhaust is pretty cool.

Set the body on yesterday the truck is only 1/2 inch lower than it was.20200206_162421.jpg 20200206_122538.jpg

Damn, you are moving quick! :waytogo:

I'm guessing the trans tunnel cleared that 10L80 no problem?
