You did good. In the long run you will be happier with the route you have gone. That machine will last you a life time. I paid $100.00 for mine from a friend but it needed a power chord. My rig has 50 foot leads (thats right ) and works great. I am not the best stick welder by any means but its fun to play with this thing and is suprisingly easy.

why not look at your own thoughts on learning...

If you try to self teach yourself about welding you wont even know if you are becoming a good weldor.. you wont learn all the shortcuts, the safety tips, the best equipment for your needs...

I highly recommend going to a community college and taking a beginning welding course,,, satisfaction comes for leanring to be a good weldor,, not from the frustration of missed opportunity..

dont be lazy.. go do it.. its a skill you will have for life,, why not learn it correctly

equipment isnt cheap.. good equipment (usually)costs more for a reason

its easier to use
it works better
it lasts longer
its easier to service

you might find a used lincoln sp100... for 100 bucks.. SURPIP did...

Once you learn a skill then you want to use it... you arent going to be able to use a 75 dollar saturday night special welder... you would give up in disgust

If all goes well, i will be picking up that same welder tomorrow. Probably will stop by harbor freight and pick up a helmet. Where can i buy rods?

I can't really afford the rods/helmet/extension cord rite now, but might as well pick up the welder when i found a deal!


Did you get the AC, or the AC/DC? I remember my class saying DC was good for specific purposes....but the one im getting is just AC. Oh well, it will start. First major project i want to do after practice is a truck bed trailer.

I'm stoked! Now i just gotta find the money to buy a helmet, gloves, and rods.

I need about $100 in stuff just to start to think aboud using it, plus rods and some metal.......and i really can't afford it right now

Theres 3 types of welding, AC, dc standard and dc reverse...

DC Standard send electricity through the gun/ rod, to the work piece, through the ground and then back to the machine.

This offers the most penetration but is harder to weld thin metals. It is also more consistent.

DC Reverse sends electricty thought he ground, through the work piece and then into the rod/ gun and back to the machine.

This makes it easier to weld thinner metal/ less penetration and more inconsistent. The fartehr from the clamp you get, the less power is making it to the rod.

AC send powere both ways (through the work piece, and gun) while alternating its direction 50 times (roughly) a second.

This is somewhere in the middle i guess. Alos its cheaper to make because you plug it into an ac wall and run ac power

so im a lil pissed off...got my plug wired in then went to try out the welder and got nothing...should the weleder be buzzing or something???i dunno if i bought a bum welder or that the electrician didnt wire it up right...is there a second switch on the welder or mabye somthing has gone bad i dunno...

Mine buzzes pretty good when its on. Havent' welded any with it, but the guy plugged it on to show me it buzzed wheni bought it.

Did you get a bum welder or whats up? Did you make sure the breaker switch was thrown?

Bought one yesterday

I bought a 3200HD Lincoln mig at Home Depot yesterday for $450. They are currently running some deal where if you charge over 299$ to a home depot card you pay no interest for 12 months and something like 20 bucks a month. I have never welded until today. I opted to set up the innershield flux core for now. It was pretty simple to get a hold of. I'm pretty sure at 110v this things got penty of power!

I have that same welder, had it for about 3 yrs now and it works great no problems at all
