might be needing a new tranny... need opinions

If those are your options your thinking of right now I would stay away from TCI, everyone I've talked to has said that they are great when they work but when they don't they are a pain in the rear for support.

Someone else to think about is www.maddogtransmissions.com

he seems pretty cool too.

man, those trannys seem pretty beefy and they are cheaper than the others...

can someone who knows alot bout trannys (i know next to nothing bout them:doah: ) please look at the godfather and punisher 700r4 from maddog and tell me if those are nice components. id really appreciate it:bow:

Before I was working a deal with Virgilh on his blazer I had planned on getting a tranny from Mad Dog Louie, nice thing is you can call his shop and since it's a one man show you can talk to him and get his opinions. He isn't out to screw anyone, just a single man that knows how to build a nice tranny looking to sell them to nice people who will appreciate his work. Great guy, give him a call and find out for yourself.

hmm im starting to think bout a sm465. or for the cost of a built 700r4 i could get a nice nv4500.

i know how manuals are on trails, but are they a big PITA in mud?

depends on how good ya' are w/ it and what gearing/tire size/etc. In my opinion for how robust the SM465's are hyped up to be if you don't mind a manual it's the only way to go, strength and price wise. An NV4500 would be killer since it gives you OD too.

well ive got 5.13s in the axles running 39.5s and am toyin with the idea of a diesel swap, but i duno

 Well you've got plenty of gears for 39.5's so I would be inclined to say go w/ an NV4500. The SM465's first gear is super low but you already have the gears to get moving so that isn't an issue (although it's a plus to the SM465 for those of us that don't have low enough gears) so I'd say go NV4500 since it will give you similar performance to your 700r4 but it'll handle a heck of a lot more.

NV4500:
1: 5.61
2: 3.04
3: 1.67
4: 1.00
5: 0.75
R: 5.04

SM465:
1: 6.55
2: 3.58
3: 1.57
4: 1.00

700r4:
1: 3.06
2: 1.63
3: 1.00
4: 0.70

Just something to think about, either way your going to have a lower bottom end and with the NV4500 you'll even retain the same OD within .05:1.

I'm too lazy to read five pages of opinions. I say do a swap to an SM465. Also the slip could just be due to a lack of fluid.

I doubt that, not because I'm an expert my any means but because I've gone through this 700r4 hell and have spent many many hours reading on other similar cases and it is almost always that the "slush box" has died.

Oh, and why SM465, he has the gears so 1st is useless to him, especially in mud it would be too low. I'll stand by my choice of the NV4500

Here's a thought, you put it in 2nd gear for mud, you dont have to start off in 2nd gear.. :wink1: As far as first being useless....haha now thats pretty funny.... ;)

Well yeah in mud it would be useless because he wouldn't have much wheel speed, on the trail sure but he mentioned mud.
No you don't have to start in first but going from a 4 speed OD tranny to a "three" speed manual wouldn't be fun. Why not just go NV4500? I don't see anything against it performance wise?

i mentioned mud, only because ive read how manuals handle on trails/rocks, which is the majority on ck5. from what ive seen most who do mud occasionally have autos. the truck is dd as mush as possible and mostly trails on weekends, but if i find a deep pit, i wont hesitate to drop in it.

Ok, I think at this point it's your choice.

haha you guys are funny. well im not going to be puttin in a tranny for a while, since im going to school, so i guess it gives me time to research and exhuast every option before making a decision.

personally id love to have a duramax/allison combo, then i could really dd it everywhere, but i duno what my chances of finding a wrecked 2500hd for "cheap" are. its prolly not that realistic either haha....but i can dream

In those links I gave you in the beginning I had mentioned doing that too, well the Allison part for sure and although it would be :pimp1: the cost was just too great. You could drop in a bb454 or even a Caddy 500+cid engine and a killer 4L80E w/ stand alone computer for much less than a bone stock duramax/allison combo. I took a ride in my dad's shop truck, a bare bones, (no carpet, cd, power anything) 2500hd w/ the duramax and allison combo and let me tell you what that thing would move!

-Avery

well the duramax/allison combo would be for mpg. it would be sweet to get the banks stuff and get some crazy numbers. i guess then it would also be alot of custom stuff to hookup older t-cases and such.

i know, im going to most likely do 6.2 unless i can find a good 6.5. i was just dreaming bout the duramax/allison...i can dream cant i? haha

so if im doin a 6.2 would it be better to get a 4L80e or built 700r4? i think when its all said and done, they would cost about the same.

Hell if you can make a 4L80E work Id do that just because..
