I am picking up a 82-85 K20 sat morning with @secutright, as far as I know this truck has been sitting for a while. Is there anything I need to know when attempting to getting it to start? I have my 1000cca battery from my k5 that Ill take. I also was told not to use ether? Never messed with these motors when they have been sitting.
Priming the IP?? is there a lever somewhere to get fuel from the tank?

Just need the 101 on bringing it back to life.
Also was told someone might have tried to steal it and possibly used ether so I dont even know if the motor is broken or what the deal is.. If i can pull it onto the trailer under its own power that would be nice.

THANKS!

Read this thread, kinda old but has all the info you should need to get the fuel system dialed back in. There is a somewhat specific order of operations...

Not much you can do if someone did try Ether, and it may be OK.

Try and bring a second equal sized battery, they can kill batteries with ease with the 21:1 CR. That brings up another very important thing, don't crank the starter for more than 30 seconds at a time. Then allow the starter a 2 or 3 minute cool down period. If it has sat for an extended period of time the tank could be full of gunk, or algae. Bring a jerry can and get it running off of that if possible.

Once you get the fuel system sorted you'll need to check the glow plugs. The quick and dirty method I like is a test light attached to the positive terminal of the battery. Touch the probe to the end of the spade on the glow plug, if the light goes on you have a good glow plug.

Wow that sounds insane simple, do these have the glow plug timer deal like a cucv?

Yeah, very similar. Making a manual GP controller is stupid simple on these too...

I'm thinking 12v to all the glows just to get it rolling will work good enough tommorow..

Make sure you take the 12 v away after its started. The stock gliw plugs don't self limit

Mine when it's cold turn on for like 10 seconds then off for a couple then on for 4 then off then on.

Once it starts if its above 50 just turn em off

Looks like they hit the important points. FWIW, my '83 would run the glow plugs for 2 seconds on and then 2 seconds off. Until it just stopped working. Now I have a momentary switch. :waytogo: AC 60G plugs are rated for many minutes on end, the original 9G plugs burn out after a few seconds.

It would be good insurance to bring along new GPs...you may find that all 8 are toast.

Is this an '82-'83 6.2 truck? Or an 84+ truck? The fuel systems are different. The older ones have 2 round fuel filters, and the one on the firewall is *before* the fuel pump. The later ones only have one filter, on the firewall, and it is after the pump. Mixing this up, I once opened the bleeder on the pre-pump filter to bleed the air out. :doah: Not a huge deal, but it caused some completely preventable starter wear, as fresh air was introduced to all the injector lines. It's easy to pump air through the fuel loop, but once it gets past the IP you may have several minutes of cranking (with many more minutes in between) before the lines get re-primed. When it does come alive, don't be surprised if you hafta floor it for 30 seconds or so...you may not get fuel to all cylinders initially.

Welcome to the dark side! What are you planning on doing with this rig?

Well it didn't happen like I thought it should because there was rats living in this thing, also had some attempt to be stolen.
I got the line primed just in time to discover the lines were cracked and it just leaked fuel everywhere. We pulled it up to the road and used a come along to get it on the trailer.

Bummer. What are you gonna do with it?
