I'm getting ready to move to Maryland (Ft Meade to be exact) and have two trucks that I'm sure will never pass emissions. They are both registered in Washington and even through local laws have always stated the plates need to be changed to (insert name of state I' currently living in), I've never done it and have never been bothered by the po-po. But my wife is talking with some folks now that are either currently stationed in MD or have been recently and they are saying the cops are relentless with ticketing out-of-state plates. I just cant fathom that cops look for plates and ticket solely on that infraction. I mean I guess I could always BS and tell them I just moved here

I'm just wondering if any other military members that have moved to MD had the same issues or if these folks are yankin my wife's chain.

EDIT: The other title wasnt appropriate for the questions I had.

I'm pretty sure that if you're military and have a residence in another state (where you're from) you are exempt from having to register in the current state you're stationed in.

This is true but the base/state will still require any local emission checks, unless things have changed. It was like this when I was stationed in Delaware and NC. I spent 3 months TDY in VA near DC driving my own vehicle with out of state plates and was never hassled.

uric, the Military can keep their home plates & registration

don't quote me, it's been a while.

Well having an inspection license in Mass. Ive run into this a couple times. People from Arizona (where there is no inspections) and they came to Mass.. Law here states if your here over 30 days you must get an Safety/ Emissions inspection sticker and abide by Mass laws, in which most people fail (although I let things go) It sucks.. And here even Base only vehicles need inspection stickers..Even if there military (excluding humvees and tanks--damnit, i would love to drive them).. and if you have a rejection, you are not allowed on base either

I just say if you dont plan to be there too long (less then 6 months or so) i would say screw it and not get one unless required by the base

If it helps any, the Air Force has done away with base stickers and the Army is supposed to stop issuing them after Jan 1st

:confused::confused::confused:

so anyone can get on now?

Here at Cherry Point, we have 100% I.D. check :dunno:

What are the two, vehicles in question? The reason I ask is because in MD anything 20 years or older , can simply be tagged historic, which requires no inspection, and as far as I know you won't get an emissions notice either.

On the out of state plates, the only area I see people getting "targeted" is generally on I95, mainly because it is a major drug running route from NY to DC and areas south. I do see a lot of out of state cars pulled over , mainly ones that could be deemed suspect (an old square body GM=not suspect, a late model with blacked out tint= suspect :D).

Just an FYI my shop/office is located approx 20minutes north of Ft Meade, and I live about an hour or so north, so if you ever need something let me know :waytogo:

I need to find this out ASAP b/c I know my K5 wont pass emissions here in CA and in NC its so old it just gets a safety inspection.

When I registered my CAC here at Schriever they never asked any vehicle info. I drive 3 or 4 different vehicles throughout the year.

I just got a new sticker last month...I'll be the last to know...:whistle::whistle:

Well, my statement could be slightly wrong. I the the army base here, Ft Carson, is ending it this year. It may not be the case for all

I was stationed in Suitland just outside of DC. I had NYS tags on my truck the whole time I was there. Couple trucks actually, never gave me an issue. I had the DOT sticker on one of them, never said nothing.

Yeah we've maintained our Washington residency since I've been in. Once the Burbs were swapped to WA plates, they've never been changed to anything else. It's easier that way; whenever we move, we call the DOL office in our hometown and change the address. Fees dont change, plates dont change, titles dont change. In Wyoming, Kansas and North Dakota, all have required that DL's and plates be changed within 90 days, and we've never done it. I've moved every two years and I'm not how long we'll be in MD, but I'm not planning to stay any longer than I have to.

The two trucks in question are the 90 and 88 Burbs. The 90 would be easy to fix; just needs cats and a tune up. The 88, well it might be easier to make it electric than to make it smog legal. Just too many changes have been made over the years. It might be ok, but I doubt it. Emmisions we never a thought when mods were done on this rig.

Well, I'm not going to worry 'bout it right now. The 90 doesnt ever leave base right now unless the weather is bad or I'm going offroad and the 88 wont be in MD until next spring (more trucks than drivers). Thanks for the info guys :waytogo:

The only thing MD can get you on is vehicle height. But with out of state plates I don't think they will bother you. I had an 84 3/4 ton with 6" and 35s, and was even a MD truck, never got pulled over in MD, with NYS tags. I can't really say around Ft. Meade, was only there a handful of times the 2 yrs couple months I was there. But I think they are used to seeing out of state plates with all the military around that base, let alone the whole area. (Ft. Meade is a ZOO!!!!!)

I keep my truck registered in Washington and although NC required inspections I was never required to have the sticker. The rules here are that you must abide by the laws of the state in which the vehicle is registered. If your state has inspections and stickers then you gotta stick too it. If not, then lucky you. But hey, this is a Marine base, we are too busy being Men to worry about emmisions and safety:whistle: Just kidding.

Yeah man...If the Airforce has recently started going away from stickers then It should be about 16-17 more years before the Marine Corps can save up the money to put into place whatever is required for the switch.
