Military moving to MD; registration q's

I read something on Military.com a while back that the Marine Corps was intending to go to the no vehicle sticker thing as well. Don't remember if it gave a date for it.

Hard to say really because most of us are speculating based upon our experiences elsewhere. The cops may be SUPER hard on this in the area or it just may be these people talking to your wife's own microcosm of negative experiences.

Lexington, KY is home to the University of Kentucky, one of the major universities in this region of the country. In addition I75 runs right next to town as a major north-south federal interstate with tons of interstate traffic. UK has 3-4 smaller universities/colleges competing with it in the immediate area. Not far away is Louisville with it's metroplex, universities, industry, etc.
When I moved here my plates had 11 months left on them. My DL was also 1 month old. My local friends EMPHASIZED how important it was to get local plates and DL. All kinds of horror stories...
...so I went and got my KY DL and plate.
Within a few months I had realized at least half the college kids around here have out of state or out of county license plates and there's so much other interstate travel here that cops would be wasting their time pulling people over for out of area license plates.
Then my buddy moved here a year later from Michigan and drove around for 6 months with Michigan plates and no one said boo to him. Only changed the plates when he bought a house here.
You might be fine.:dunno:

The only thing MD can get you on is vehicle height. But with out of state plates I don't think they will bother you. I had an 84 3/4 ton with 6" and 35s, and was even a MD truck, never got pulled over in MD, with NYS tags. I can't really say around Ft. Meade, was only there a handful of times the 2 yrs couple months I was there. But I think they are used to seeing out of state plates with all the military around that base, let alone the whole area. (Ft. Meade is a ZOO!!!!!)

THe 90 has a mild lift at 2.5" rear and 0" front with 33's. Looks taller than most 4x4 Burbs, but its not crazy high. I cut the fenders to clear the tires so I wouldnt have to lift it much. The 88 is 2wd and can almost plow snow the fornt is so low, so again no worries on height there. I do have the standard Burb issue of the left tail light never working, so I'll need to fix those soon (both have the same issue, both have been rewired, and both still dont work:confused:), but other than that, these trucks arent head turners.

I can't speak for MD, but I got some paperwork from base legal here a few years ago that states that active duty military are not required to register their vehicles in the state they are stationed in, but 2 out of 3 of the following items either need to be from your state of residence or the state you are stationed in. Driver's license, insurance and registration. As long as 2 out of 3 are from either, you should be good, but check with base legal to be sure.

Registration and Drivers License are two things that are not varied by state or military branch.

As long as you are ACTIVE Duty, you can maintain the registration and Drivers License from whatever state you want. My WA state DL will not expire as long as I am active duty. I have had the same on since I was 18yrs old and wont change it until I retire from the USMC.

The whole state inspection thing though, is probably dependant on what base or branch etc...you are in.

I know 13 years ago when I went to check in at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, CA I was forced to have my Michigan registered Blazer smog tested so I could get the base sticker.

Money out of my PFC pocket for nothing basically.

I'm active duty stationed in Norfolk, and I can confirm that those days are over. I've been active duty for 18 years, and I do remember when I had a truck with Alabama tags, but still had to get the Virginia Inspection and Va Beach city sticker, but that's all gone now. Soldier's and Sailors Civil Relief Act changed a lot of laws for us military folks.

I have a Florida drivers license with my Virginia beach address on it right now. Once you change your state residency to Florida, all you have to do is "INTEND" to retire back to Florida, and you can keep your state residency in Florida without even owning property there. 2 of my 3 vehicles have Florida tags, and I have no requirement to get any Virginia inspections.

FT Meade is a madhouse.... and if the cops pulled over every out of state tag in that area... well... there is not enough time in the year for them to do it. Sounds like the infamous "Spouse Gossip" that is so prevalent, and oh so often dead wrong.

Good luck up there.

Thanks for the info guys. CK5, the only place on earth you can see pinups, b***h about politics, see a video about full auto shotguns and maybe find some info about Blazers :thumb:
