:dunno: I know that alot of guys use military tires for wheelin but how streetable are they. The ones I'm looking at getting are Goodyear Wrangler Hummer take-offs 37-12.5-16.5. I believe they are bias ply. Any comments?

The hummer 37s are radial. They have super weak sidewalls.2 ply sidewall 4 ply tread.Out of the four I bought 2 had holes in the sidewalls.I traded them back for the 36s 4ply sidewalls and 6 ply bias tread.Better for off road.not as good as the 37s for the street.

These are Michelin 11.00R16's (37's) on my rig.

These are LAV tires. I bought them with 2/3rd tread.

If I drive coast to coast 10 times, I won't wear them oot!!

One tire can support my whole rig.

BTW, I paid $330 for all 4 on eBay :D .

Same tires I have. Mine have a lot less tread, but they run great on the pavement. I grooved mine, and they are a lot quieter. I don't think they are an outstanding offroad tire, but I also don't feel like they are a hinderance either.

I paid $250 for 6. :p:

I drove 70mph for 400mi driving home from Moab. No problem.

Oh and I don't think they weigh that much more than any other tire. I don't think my steel beadlocked tired weigh any more than my buddy's 40" MTRs on H2s or his spare 39" TSL on steel wheel. I think this belief has been going around because if they are mounted on the steel military wheel, yes they are VERY heavy because there is a ton of steel in the wheel and they have the run flats.

Nice looking rig .Very mean.
Someone in myoff road club has those on his jeep. They didn't seem all that great on it.Maybe better on a heavier k5.They look mean. The main thing great on the surplus tire is the cheap price.civy tires are much better. If you are low on funds mil spec is the way to go.I got mine with 95% tread or better for 400.In tucson
Btw I heard the xl's were 38's

Gummint Contract Tars

You get what you pay for, and like tire mfgrs do for WalMart, Costco, & BJ's, there's "special" tires for "economically minded" consumers. Ok, so, military tires? Tires made for governmental agencies means tires that meet the "lowest-price bidder" criterion.

So your contention is that Michelin makes poorer tires for the military vs. the civilian world? How does that work? Because you could go buy the same Michelin XLs new if you wanted to pay an arm and a leg for them.

I'd like more information on this...

Yep 38". My tires measured 37" actual with considerable wear, so I think new they would be right at 38". I was told the sizing for the 11.00r16 means 11" of side wall on either side of the 16" wheel. 11"+16"+11"=38". Don't know how valid that is, but it seems to hold up for these tires. :dunno:

I'm pretty happy with mine. They are kind of narrow but they did pretty well. They wear really well (long lasting) and are super tough. The army and marines both use them on 6x6 armored vehicles.

Military Tires Nay, Interco Yay

A buddy had some 48" Michellins on his SuperDuty...they wore and drove WAY better than his previous 46" Baja Claws. I'll never run a MT tire after seeing those BCs  . But those Michellins tend to do really well on heavier vehicles. But boggers are better...:D

I didn't say these tires are total crap. Its just that civy tires are made with our sport in mind and designed to meet the requirements better.Mine do well for my needs. They do ok in a all around kinda way. They just scream like boggers going down the road.

Far as cheap.I read that the goverment pays somewhere around 600 bucks a tire for the hummer tires.Hows that the cheapest?I.m sure they were bids lower than goodyear.I even seen a knock of of these same tires at the place I bought mine..I'm sure it cost less.He just said stay away from those.

I may go to the xl's next time.I need one that wears good.I also have a big heavy diesel.High load range wouldn't hurt LOL.:haha: .Need more lift to fit them.

You're wrong in extending that analogy that far. As mentioned, check your local Goodyear dealer to see what those tires cost. Definately NOT lowest price.
