miserable droning between 70 and 80mph... Adding a side branch resonator.

Cool. Does the size of the hole matter? Do you make it match tube size going into the resonator? Or make it smaller?

I approve of cactus exhaust. Please continue and post results. :thumb:

It's not diameter but the length is an exact calculation.

No I mean do you make the hole in the main tube, the same size as the resonator tube, or slightly smaller etc, or does it not matter. Ive never really read into any of it. Kinda interesting.

The sound wave travels down the tube and back again. You tune for the quarter wavelength you're trying to diminish. So by the time it gets down there and back you're at the 1/2 wave point, which is basically inverted to the offending front thus canceling out the sound.

The bigger the pipe the more wave can get down there - to a point. You get to diminishing returns real quick.

If you wanted to really get into it, you'd get a thermal camera on the exhaust and the hottest spot should be the point in the exhaust where there's the most pressure, and use that as the mounting point for the branch.

You're getting into some very expensive, very specific tools at that point. I'm gonna hope my math was right and get this thing welded in ASAP.

Was thinking of something along these lines for converter placement, wouldn't a fairly wide range of temperature crayons allow you to do similar? Not nearly as technical, but should be possible, no?

I would think so, or one of the IR electronic hand held temp gauges. can get them now pretty cheap.

that resonance chamber for the exhaust is new to me. Now I get what the factory means when talking about "those" tubes on air cleaners and such.

A noise accumulator... cool

Curious as well, you did have this in when you ran to Moab?

He did get it installed before blazer bash. Early testing showed it helped some but maybe not as much. But I'll let him give the full report.

Has this progressed any?

Josh
Yeah I got it welded in before I left for Moab.

Yep

At first I wasn't impressed. But after driving to Moab and back (1155mi total) I'm actually pretty happy with it. It's still loud, it's a 25yr old truck with poly motor mounts and no catalytic converter, that ain't gonna change. The pulsating is pretty much gone though. It drones a little between 67-72mph, by 75-76 it settles down though. A month ago we drove 3hrs in the suburban at highway speed and we felt beat up when we got home. After a 7hr straight drive to Moab, we felt just fine. I consider that a success. I'll probably end up cutting it and setting up a slip on adjuster to fine tune it but it's definitely making a difference.
