Missing pieces of my carb

Truck is an 81 K5 350. It has a Holley 80457-3 carb.
So lately it was having issues with cold starts and when I would first give it gas out of the drive way it would bog and want to die. Then all of a sudden it would pick up and then no more problems. Well it has gotten worse. It has died a few times. Another possibly related issue is when offroad and moving around in the transfer case the idle would not go low enough to change from high to low or visa versa. A lot of stabbing the gas to try to get the rpms to drop was necessary.

So today I pull the air filter off and start just...touching things. Figuring out how it works.


***Disclaimer*** This is my first carbed vehicle

So I kinda push down on what I think is the choke valve and it pops open as though it was stuck shut by crud or whatnot. I notice that there is nothing connected to the linkage. It is just dangling. So my questions.

Is this correct?
If not, what can I do to fix it?
If not correct, why did it run great for the first year?

A little about myself.

28yo. I'm a recently unemployed Electronics Tech.

My automotive knowledge is almost entirely restricted to watercooled VWs. I have had 2 corrados, a mk2 jetta, mk3 GTI, and a 20th GTI.

Got my first Honda a few months ago. 2004 Accord V6 6MT.

Got the K5 about a year ago for a great deal. Wanted one...since....almost..forever. It will need a new trans shortly. Ahhh...That about sums it up.
 
it's the choke rod... surprising it runs at all... the actual choke is missing. it attaches to those bosses with the screw holes....
 
Clean the hell out of it with some carb cleaner and tighten it up, then just pick up a holley electric choke conversion kit. They're about 50 bucks. Its just held on by three screws and connects to a 12v ignition switched power source.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the qjet what was on there stock? I have heard about the qjets being better for offroading. Mine will die if I start jumping too many hills one after the other.

The intake is a weiand. Not sure what kind.
 
From one Fl. Electronics Tech to another, it looks like its time to cut your losses. Find a good rebuilt and swap it out.
fixing the choke is not that hard, but by the time you find the pieces and put them on, something else is going to need work.

Others might have a better idea, and only ask about what brand to go back with if you want to see the word QuadraJet typed lots of times.......

I'm guessing that if its an automatic then its a TH350. I don't think they put the 700R4s in that year, but I drive Fords, so what do I know.

On the offhand chance it is a 700R4, and someone here will volunteer what you have pretty quick when they read this, DO NOT drive the vehicle one inch after swapping the carb until you have set the TV cable. Its easy to do, but can get out of adjustment when swapping a carb, and will burn up a tranny quick if it is.
 
You seem to have a spreadbore type intake manifold (wider at the rear, narrow at front) and are using a spreadbore to 4 barrel adapter or your manifold accepts both types.

Quadrajets are stock and are good offroad, but you can easily convert your carb to an offroad set up like the truck avenger series carbs for much less.
 
Yep, typed too slow again. Warned you about the Qjet lovers here........
 
Thanks for all the info. I think that due to my employment status I will either be sourcing a used qjet in decent condition (pisses me off when I get going jumping lord knows what and then it just dies) or a new electric choke setup.

TH350 btw.
