Well, I figure I may as well start a build on her. Maybe if she's on here then y'all will keep my feet to the fire to continue to work on her.

Lil history:
She's a Craigslist find. $600 running but not moving (no driveshafts). The u-bolt broke on rear and it was driven home on the front which then broke. I found a front driveshaft on CL. When I went to pick her up the PO had put a front shaft on her. So I cleaned up the splines on the rear shaft where it had gotten dinged up and the put the yoke from the front I found onto the rear and bolted her up. Now she moves. Well, long story short my son drove her with no oil and locked her up.:angry1: Later after she cooled down she started back up but was knocking. Hence the 5.3.

She had a 350/350/203. I would like 5.3/4L60/203. Will a 203 bolt up to the 4L60? Don't know.:dunno: Is a 241 better? Don't know.:dunno: I have many, MANY questions and if I find info I'll ask here to verify. If I can't find info I'll ask here. The reason I want the 203 is I eventually would like a doubler.

As she is sitting now:

So that is where everything has to fit.:eek1:

Right now I'm cleaning up the motor. It had an oil leak from, I'm guessing, the valve covers. Made for a pretty good mess. I'm a bit apprehensive about it all because I would hate to get water and other stuff where it doesn't need to be. What should I be careful of?

Along with the engine I'm going to be cleaning the engine bay and putting a coat of paint in there. She deserves to be pretty.

What a jumble of wires. I have taken them all off and hopefully be able to put them back in after removing what I don't need.

The 241 is better, I would use that. I would build the doubler out of the truck and stab it in later.
Nice start.

I can go with a 241. What years kept the manual shift 241 or better way to ask, when did all the push button mess start on 4WD?

96 would be the answer. But that doesn't matter. A GMT400 241 won't work as its the wrong side driveshaft drop. You need to score a earlier 241 from a burb or blazer. 91 and older.

I have a possible lead on a 700r4 and NP241C from a 1988 Silverado. I know I want a 4L60E but will that transfer case hook up to the 4L60E? From what I understand the 700r4 is the predecessor to the 4L60e or am I wrong? If I cannot find a 4L60e will the 700r4 work without losing a lot of efficiency?

In short: the 4L60E is the electronic version of the 700.

Offroad design has some decent tech to read up some.

Remember that a 4L60E would need a trans control unit. Which your 5.3 would be able to control.

I would use the 60 myself.

If that 88 is a gmt400 the 241 would be the wrong drop.

Well, I pulled off the tape and loom off a section of the wiring harness and zip tied it together as I did that so I can "reloom" it back together. Well, the dishwasher doesn't work and my wife said she's not washing it so...

I put it in a mesh gym bag and tossed it in the front loader.
Two things:
1. The wires look great! Not perfectly clean on the connectors but mostly, yes.
2. The front loader tumbles the harness out of the bag.

Huh.

Well, I'll do the rest the same way. Works awesome!!:woot:

A 1990 or 1991 Blazer/Jimmy or V10 Suburban will have the NP241 you need with the VSS.

cam question

I'm wondering if there is a specific camshaft I can install before I put the engine in the truck that will give me better torque and HP. I'd rather have more torque than horses but will take both. I've been looking all over for some of this info but I'm coming up with lots of vague suggestions and opinions. Does anyone know of a thread that covers this sufficiently for this engine... L59 5.3?

Well, I finally have the 4L60E. I can't believe they were that difficult to find around here without paying $900 or more. They just disappear from the salvage yards. Now I need the wiring harness connectors. They just cut them off when they removed the tranny from my donor truck for the harness.
Also, I need warmer weather. Getting too old to be lying on cold gravel.:frown1:
