I don't get it. Tbi, newer gm crate w/ aprox 60-70k on it, 14 mpg, doesn't burn oil. WTF?

Test said the hydrocarbons were high- 427. Max is 220

Anyone? I got a computer controlled rig so i didn't have to worry about this crap...

Is it high at idle? IIRC, that means it is running lean. If i were you, I would A) drive it pretty hard on the way to the test. B) during the test have the A/C and all the lights on as this puts an extra load on the motor and (being TBI) adds fuel to compensate. Alot of people dont know that in oregon, you can take the test and fail, then go right back through. So, i would start by doing A and B above and then go back through with only lights on and then try with only AC on. Whatever you can do to enrich the A/F mixture.

No AC. She was good and warm when i got there. First idle test was in the 600s, next one in the 400s. I know i can go back through- took me several tries and carb tweeking to get my 82 passed.

Maybe i should just put a Prius sticker on it...

Trust me, i'd put a ford emblem on before i'd put a prius sticker on...

so...wouldn't running leaner be better? Could my cat be the issue?

Believe it or not, lots of mechanics have to force a car to run worse to get them through DEQ. Way back when i got a little insite into it. We would do all sorts of crazy things like backing the timing off, adjusting idle mixtures, putting a little BB in the vacuum advance line so that the timing would dtay retarded, packing the intake air box full of ice, Taking a tourch to the cat to get them glowing red hot, driving all the way to the DEQ spot in 2nd gear to get the cat as hot as possible and burn off as much carbon as possible, seafoam, "guarnteed to pass" fuel aditive, Setting the choke to stay on just a little bit, you name it! All sorts of crazy stuff i tell ya!

I can see doing all that with a carbed motor. But why is my computer controlled motor, getting good economy for a v8, not passing emissions?

I'll have to pull my plugs and cap/ rotor and see how it all looks. I did a little searching and the cat could be some of it, but usually isn't the real reason for high HCs

Because newer rigs need to be cleaner :roll eyes:

Back when I had to do emissions on my Blazer it didn't even have to get on the rollers, they half-assedly put a pipe on one of the exhaust exits and ran it at idle and ~2500 rpm under no load. The whole thing was totally stupid, it had no emissions equipment on it from the factory and always passed by a factor of ~100% or better on all counts, why is anyone wasting money on testing?

My guess is that the additives that claim they clear emissions have oxygen in them (i.e. alcohol, etc) and hence, if your cat is still working, will lower your unburnt HC's. That may be key.

IMO, 14 mpg is great :pimp:

Much of that was done with EFI vehicles. My guess is that the truck is running slightly lean at idle. If i were you, i think i would try that "guaranteed to pass" stuff before anything else. Maybe youtube it? I dunno.

Ooops. Lol!

I have a sister in law in bend. Will it draw a red flag that i have one rig registered here and one there? I'll try t get it passed. I got my 82 to pass

I dont think so. At one time i had the jetta and 90 registered here and the 78 and 79 registered up there. Now, the only one registered here is the jetta and all the rest are registered up there. "any time they are in town is for maintenance purposes". Keeping it registered here and going through DEQ is the best way but like with the 78 and 90, there was no way i was going to be able to get those things through DEQ! The Blazer i just did out of convienence and cost savings. No $21 DEQ fee and $19x2 multnomah county fee.

So, after the first test i replaced the cap and rotor (which hardly needed it) ran some of that guaranteed to pass crap and went back in. I came within 17 pints of passing...

Soo, went home and did plugs and wires, retested the morning and failed with worse results then my first test!

Don't really have the money to do a new cat right now, so it will most likely get parked and/or registered somewhere else.

Anyone know what the emmisions specs are for our rigs for when they rolled off the assembly line?

This is what I used. All my #'s went down to unmeasurable except I think it was the NO that went up slightly. $20 @ NAPA. Note: this was on my 2000 Turd with 270K miles and original cats.

About the cat. FYI, I have used the magnaflow high flow 3" cat with good results through deq and its only like 75 bucks from summit.

i would go down farmington to hwy 217. get on 217 and drive it from there to the testing station. also i would slow down at about 185th and shift it down to 2nd gear. hold that gear all the way to the testing station.

if you go on the dmv website. they make it easy for you. it takes 2 minutes to change your address. they also have a mailing address form on there. all my stuff is registered in seaside, but all the mail and such comes to my beaverton addy. like i said. 2 minutes and done.

also a delphi or ntk o2 sensor for that truck should be less than $25. that would be a good idea too.

I did that very same "loop" to the dmv this morning and got her nice and warm. Then i sat in line for almost a half hour. I have better luck on wed nights when they are open late. Its just annoying that this test was worse that my first test. Its all bs if you ask me.

I've owned a lot of piles of crap. This is not one of those trucks. It runs great. Its 24 years old, what do they expect? I do tune ups when my truck is running poorly or getting bad economy. My truck is doing neither. I don't need to throw money at it for no good reason. Grrrrr. Ok, rant over for now.
